Jaime Griesemer, a level designer from the original Halo: Combat Evolved, has expressed his disappointment with some of the design choices in the upcoming remake, Halo: Campaign Evolved. He was particularly frustrated with changes made to aspects of the game he worked on nearly 25 years ago, and shared his concerns after seeing early gameplay footage.
Remaking a game like Halo: Combat Evolved after so many years is a tough spot. Updating the gameplay to feel modern is important, but changes can also upset longtime fans. We already know sprint is being added, which has always been a debated feature in the Halo series. Halo Studios has a real challenge finding the right balance between old and new.
Halo: Combat Evolved Level Designer Criticizes Upcoming Remake
Following the reveal of Halo: Combat Evolved, original level designer Jaime Griesemer discussed a specific design choice on X (formerly Twitter). He explained that players weren’t meant to drive the Warthog and easily defeat the Hunters in The Silent Cartographer level. Griesemer said he deliberately added rocks to the area to force players to fight the Hunters on foot. When asked why this bothered him, he stated simply, “Because I made it right and they are breaking it for no reason.”
Originally, getting a Warthog vehicle into the fight against the Hunters was a tough, complicated process. The game’s creator even spent an entire day making it deliberately challenging, though not entirely impossible. In the updated version, players can now easily drive the Warthog right up to the Hunters and defeat them using the vehicle’s turret.
The online discussion about a potential remake of Halo: Combat Evolved was overwhelmingly negative. One commenter, Griesemer, suggested that the Halo series as a whole is struggling to stay relevant and might benefit from a long break – even a complete restart. However, with the recent release of Halo: Campaign Evolved on PlayStation, Microsoft appears committed to continuing the franchise, making a break unlikely in the near future.
The developers have confirmed that Halo: Combat Evolved is getting some level design updates, especially in areas they feel need the most work, like The Library. However, it’s still unclear how much of the campaign will be changed overall, and whether players will like the new designs remains to be seen.
