A Hollow Knight: Silksong fan recently proposed an interesting idea about the design of Herrah the Beast, which led to a thoughtful conversation online. This highlights the fact that many of the smaller, intriguing details in Hollow Knight: Silksong probably won’t have complete explanations, and that’s part of what makes them so captivating.
Major Hollow Knight and HK: Silksong spoilers ahead.
In the world of Hollow Knight: Silksong, the Weavers are a spider-like people created by a powerful god named Grandmother Silk. They discovered the truth about their creation and revolted, trapping her in the Cradle above the Citadel. Hornet, the main character of Silksong, is connected to Grandmother Silk through her mother, Herrah the Beast, who was a Weaver first seen in the original Hollow Knight game.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Fans Are Split on Whether Herrah’s Head Shape Is a Mask
Herrah doesn’t resemble the other members of her tribe as they appear in the later parts of Hollow Knight: Silksong. A Reddit user named Whenpigfly666 shared a somewhat unusual idea to explain this difference, and it’s become a popular topic for discussion among fans. The main point of debate is Herrah’s head – people are wondering if it’s an actual shell or just a disguise.
Hornet’s head shape seems to resemble her mother’s, but masks are deeply connected to the story of both Hollow Knight and Silksong. This means there’s evidence to support either interpretation, and the games themselves don’t confirm which one is true.

Additionally, the theory proposed by Whenpigfly666 doesn’t address the difference in body types between Herrah and the other Weavers in Pharloom. Fans have come up with several possible reasons for this, and these explanations aren’t necessarily contradictory. One idea is that the original Hollow Knight suggests childbirth is difficult for Weavers, which could explain Herrah’s larger size. However, a problem with this theory arises from Hollow Knight: Silksong, where seeing Herrah after giving birth in Act 3 reveals she doesn’t have a large abdomen. It’s currently unknown if this is a change to the established story or if there’s a valid reason for the difference.
It’s also possible Herrah’s appearance naturally changed as she aged, like happens with all creatures, real or imagined. Or, simply having the title of Weaver Queen might have been reason enough for a unique design, even without specific story explanations from the developers.
