A player recently figured out how many SDU tokens you’ll need to unlock all the upgrades in Borderlands 4. It turns out you’ll need 3,225 tokens, which is a lot, but thankfully, the game actually lets you collect more than that! Reddit user repapap shared this information, explaining that these tokens are earned by completing challenges and finding hidden collectibles throughout the game.
Previous Borderlands games let players use SDUs to improve things like how much ammo they could carry and their inventory size. Borderlands 4 is bringing back SDUs, but this time you’ll buy them with special SDU tokens instead of in-game money or Eridium like you did in older games.
Borderlands 4 Players Can Unlock All SDUs for 3,225 Tokens and Still Have Some Left Over
The most fascinating part of repapap’s research on Skill Development Units (SDUs) in Borderlands 4 isn’t just the total number of tokens needed for all upgrades, but how many tokens players will have left over after getting everything. Repapap likely did this to help players prioritize which collectibles and activities are most worthwhile, ultimately saving them time.
Here are the SDU categories players can upgrade using the tokens they find:
- Pistol Ammo
- SMG Ammo
- Assault Rifle Ammo
- Shotgun Ammo
- Sniper Rifle Ammo
- Backpack
- Bank
- Lost Loot
A recent discovery by repapap shows that players who collect all SDU tokens in Borderlands 4 will have 565 tokens left over even after buying every available upgrade. They also found that this surplus of tokens makes collecting Vault Symbols and Lost Capsules feel less important in the game.
Although you can earn SDU tokens through many different activities in Borderlands 4, the game still has lots of collectibles that don’t give you any. To help players find these, a Reddit user named repapap created a list of every collectible in Borderlands 4 that doesn’t reward SDU tokens.
According to a Reddit post by repapap, these collectibles won’t help you advance in SDU progression:
- Dead Bolts
- Echo Logs
- Bobble Heads
- Vault Hunter Guides
- Discovering named locations
- Vault Key Fragments
Players like repapap are valuable contributors to the Borderlands 4 community, particularly helping those who are still progressing towards the endgame and want to use their time effectively. Essentially, if you want to get the most out of the game, it’s best to avoid certain collectibles and focus on activities and items related to SDUs, along with Borderlands 4 Vault Symbols and Lost Capsules.
