Should Scream 7 And Its Potential Sequel Be Filmed Back To Back?

Highlights

  • Scream 7 filming starts Dec 2024, possibly leading to back-to-back filming for Scream 8.
  • Back-to-back filming model could keep fans engaged with quick successive releases.
  • Previous delays could lead to extended production, potentially avoiding long waits between sequels.

As a die-hard Scream fan who’s been through the rollercoaster of suspense, gore, and twists since the original film premiered back in 1996, I can’t help but get excited about the prospect of Scream 7 and potentially Scream 8 being filmed back-to-back.

The production for Scream 7 is set to commence in December 2024, having been delayed from its original September start. The filming process is expected to last four months, a relatively extended period for a horror movie, sparking rumors that they might be shooting Scream 7 and a potential follow-up simultaneously. As of now, there’s no confirmation about Scream 8, but given the success of the recent sequels, it seems likely that a sequel to Scream 7 will materialize.

As a die-hard Scream fan, I’ve been buzzing with excitement about rumors suggesting that Scream 7 could kickstart a fresh trilogy centered around Neve Campbell’s iconic character, Sidney Prescott. This would follow a pattern similar to the Halloween reboot trilogy. If this is indeed the plan, it seems logical for Scream 7 and Scream 8 to be filmed consecutively when Neve Campbell and Kevin Williamson’s schedules sync up nicely.

Filming Scream 7 & 8 Back-To-Back Makes Sense

Initially, the planned shooting period for “Scream 7” was slated from September to December 2024. However, Neve Campbell revealed some delays in the movie’s production timeline, pushing it back to start in December of this year. Despite the change in start date, the overall filming duration remains unaltered, with the production now expected to last until April 2025. Given that “Scream 6” was filmed in just nine weeks, the extended shooting schedule for “Scream 7” has sparked curiosity as to why it’s almost twice as long.

YouTube personality Craven Something Scary recently conducted a live broadcast, during which he proposed an explanation for the extended filming timeline of Scream 7. Numerous viewers find his hypothesis plausible.

Could it be that they are simultaneously working on two movies for a four-month filming period, resulting in two separate blocks of production time for a feature film? Essentially, they are producing two films concurrently. This approach would mean that we get Scream 7 with an exhilarating cliffhanger ending, which serves as part one, followed by a year’s gap before the release of Scream 8, which was actually filmed ahead of time.

In the past, making multiple sequels of a franchise like “Back to the Future,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and “The Matrix” by filming them one after another has been effective because it allows for quick succession of releases, keeping audiences engaged without long waits that might cause interest to wane. Interestingly, the horror genre had previously avoided this approach, but Rene Harlin’s reboot trilogy of “The Strangers” broke this trend. For this project, Harlin chose to film all three installments simultaneously. The first chapter, “The Strangers: Chapter 1,” hit theaters in May 2024, with Chapter 2 scheduled for release later this year, and Chapter 3 due in early 2025.

Given these circumstances, it’s quite possible that production for Scream 7 and Scream 8 will be done simultaneously from December 2024 to April 2025. If so, fans can expect the movies to hit theaters relatively close together, with Scream 7 potentially premiering towards the end of 2025 first.

Back-To-Back Filming Could Avoid A Long Wait Between Movies

Should Scream 7 And Its Potential Sequel Be Filmed Back To Back?

As a die-hard Scream fan, I was thrilled when Kevin Williamson envisioned Scream 4 as the kickoff for a fresh trilogy, even going so far as outlining the blueprint for the subsequent sequels. Unfortunately, the poor performance of the third installment put an end to that vision. Now, whispers hint that Scream 7 could spark another trilogy. But if it’s not filmed simultaneously with the next sequel, fans like me might find ourselves waiting years for the next chapter, should Scream 7 underperform. Craven himself hinted at this in his live stream: it seems we might be in for a long wait.

We don’t want to have a cliffhanger ending, and then we don’t get another movie for 10 years.

It’s understandable that longtime Scream fans have been anxious, given the decade-long gap between Scream 4 and Radio Silence’s Scream (2022). As Scream 4 has held up remarkably well over time, it’s unfortunate that a direct sequel to it wasn’t immediately produced. If Scream 7 were to disregard Scream (2022) and Scream 6, it could set the stage for a more straightforward follow-up to Scream 4, which would delight many devoted fans of the original series.

As a die-hard fan of the Scream series, I can’t help but suggest an exciting idea: If they extend the four-month filming schedule for Scream 7, why not use that extra time to film Scream 8 as well? It would be heartbreaking if we had to wait longer and risk it not happening at all. If Kevin Williamson decides to end Scream 7 on a cliffhanger with Ghostface surviving, changing the format, it would leave us hanging if Scream 8 didn’t follow swiftly after.
