The team behind PUBG is working on a new game that’s different from their battle royale hit. They’re using advanced machine learning to build huge online worlds, and their first step is a game called Prologue: Go Wayback! This game is the first of three they have planned.
Prologue: Go Wayback! is a challenging single-player game where you explore and try to survive in a randomly generated world. Each new game creates a massive 64 square kilometer map filled with difficult landscapes and unpredictable weather. Your goal is to travel across this world, managing your hunger and thirst, to reach the weather tower.
PUBG Creator Pivots To Exploration And Survival Games
Player Unknown Productions is calling their next big project, Project Artemis, a plan to build large, open-world multiplayer games powered by artificial intelligence.
“Go Wayback!” is the name of our research project focused on using machine learning to help our developers quickly create expansive and believable environments within Unreal Engine 5 for players to experience.
Brendan Greene, the creator of PUBG, recently discussed his new project, Go Wayback! (part of Project Artemis). He anticipates a mixed reception, admitting, “I expect a lot of people will dislike it initially,” suggesting it might take time for the concept to gain acceptance.
Honestly, I don’t mind if what I do gets people talking – that’s really all I’m hoping for. Remember when Battle Royale first came out? A lot of people didn’t understand it at the beginning, but it eventually clicked. I feel like this is similar. My main goal is to build these huge, immersive worlds that everyone can enjoy.
—Brendan Greene
The early access version of Prologue: Go Wayback! launches on November 20th and will feature three distinct game modes.
- Go Wayback! – Chart your way to the weather tower.
- Objective: Survive – Live for as long as possible.
- Free Roam Mode – Explore as you wish.
Players can now customize their game experience with options like changing the weather and time of day. A map editor is also included, letting you design your own levels or import existing ones.
PUBG really set the standard for battle royale games, which have become incredibly popular. Now, Player Unknown Productions is trying something new with a unique, evolving world built using machine learning and exploration. It’s too early to say if it will be a success, but they might be leading the way again, and it will be exciting to see how it develops.
