Play These FPS Games Before Halo 1 Remake

Released alongside the original Xbox in 2001, Halo: Combat Evolved was the first game in the Halo series and revolutionized console shooting games. Its impact was so significant that other companies attempted to create games that could compete with—or surpass—it. Decades later, Halo‘s influence remains unmatched. To commemorate its 10th anniversary, a remastered version called Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary was released in 2011.

After 25 years, Microsoft is releasing a complete remake of the original Halo called Halo: Combat Evolved. Surprisingly, it will be available on PlayStation consoles in 2026. These futuristic, first-person shooter games are also considered some of the best in the genre, and Halo fans are sure to enjoy them.

Halo: Reach

The Prequel That Started It All

Okay, so if you’re getting into Halo and want to be totally prepared for the new remake, you need to play Halo: Reach first. It’s a prequel to the original, and while you don’t have to play it to understand the main story, it really adds to the whole vibe. Honestly, it’s a great way to learn the ropes too – the controls haven’t changed a ton since the old Xbox days. Plus, instead of playing as Master Chief, you get to experience the story through the eyes of other Spartans as they desperately try to defend the planet Reach from a surprise attack by the Covenant. Today, most players are focused on Destiny 2, which continues to thrive thanks to regular updates and major expansions since its 2017 launch. The game offers a satisfying experience with its variety of classes, weapons, and responsive, precise shooting mechanics, all in pursuit of valuable loot.

Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare

The game feels incredibly polished, and the story mode is a fast-paced, thrilling experience that will keep you hooked. While it currently lacks multiplayer – and most players aren’t actively seeking it anymore – the single-player campaign is absolutely worth buying on its own.

A Mechanized Assault

Titanfall 2 is a fantastic shooter that often flies under the radar. You play as a soldier in the future, fighting on foot and piloting powerful mechs. The single-player campaign is visually impressive and packed with exciting action sequences and unexpected moments. Even though it was released in 2016, the gameplay still feels fresh and modern. The team at Respawn Entertainment, many of whom previously worked on Call of Duty, clearly know how to create a great shooting experience, much like Bungie.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

The Halo Killer At Its Peak

Killzone: Shadow Fall was one of the first games available when the PlayStation 4 launched, and it marked the end of the main Killzone story. While it’s the fourth game in the series, you don’t need to have played the previous ones to enjoy it. This installment offers more open levels with multiple ways to defeat the Helghast, the series’ signature glowing, orange-eyed enemies.

As a gamer, I was blown away by the sheer variety of weapons – you can take enemies down quietly with a knife or go loud with a powerful rifle. Honestly, the story itself didn’t grab me, but the action is incredible! If you’re a Halo fan like me, you absolutely need to give Sony’s Killzone a try – it was originally hyped as a direct competitor, and it really delivers on the fast-paced combat.

Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection

Two Games In One

The Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection brings together the first two Battlefront games, originally released on consoles like the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox. These games let you experience campaigns based on the original and prequel Star Wars trilogies, and you can play from either a first-person or third-person perspective.

Players can battle as various groups, from Clone Troopers to the Rebel Alliance, and even directly control iconic characters like Darth Vader for short periods. Star Wars has heavily influenced sci-fi shooters like Halo, and this game remains an enjoyable experience.

Atmospheric Horror

I remember being totally blown away by BioShock when it first came out. It wasn’t about space like a lot of other shooters at the time, but it really pulled you into this incredible, detailed sci-fi world – it reminded me of how Halo felt when it first came out. It was like a modern take on System Shock, and it brought this really creepy, atmospheric horror to the Xbox 360. You’re stuck underwater in this ruined city called Rapture, and the whole game is about trying to escape. It was amazing!

Featuring superpowers, machine guns, chaotic citizens, and massive divers armed with drills, BioShock was an instant success. It’s highly recommended for fans of Halo, especially if you can experience it without knowing anything about the story beforehand.
