
One of the best parts of the original The Outer Worlds was its detailed companion system. The Outer Worlds 2 brings companions back with even more to offer, including new skills, helpful passive effects, and individual stories for each one.
In Outer Worlds 2, you’ll meet six companions throughout your journey. Two are available from the start, but you’ll need to find and unlock the other four. This guide will show you how to recruit every companion and gives a quick overview of what each one can do.
Niles
Associated Faction: Earth Directorate
- Special Companion Ability: Spread Out, I’ll Hold Em
- Effect: Niles taunts all enemies in an area around him. After, he fires three shots at the target, dealing increased damage.
- Other Special Abilities: Gives you the ability to access the full Crafting menu when not at a Crafting Bench. Talk to Niles and ask to use his Engineering talents to craft while out in the world.
You’ll meet Niles right away at the beginning of the game, and he’ll automatically become a member of your team when you first arrive on Paradise Island.
V.A.L.E.R.I.E.
Associated Faction: Earth Directorate
- Special Companion Ability: Emergency Protocols
- Effect: VALERIE fires a volley of syringes with healing drugs at you, applying a strong heal-over-time effect and granting massive damage reduction for a short duration.
- Other Special Abilities: Will heal party members (including you) when they get low on health, and can prevent you from consuming Bypass Shunts when you Hack while she is in the party.
You’ll get VAL as a companion right away at the beginning of the game. She’ll automatically join your team when you first explore Paradise Island.
Inez
Associated Faction: Auntie’s Choice
- Special Companion Ability: The Magic Bullet
- Effect: Inez gets into position and launches a volley of hot plasma at the target, dealing heavy damage to them.
- Other Special Abilities: Has a customizable grafted appendage that can be used for defense or offense, and grants you extra Inhaler Charge percentage from Drugs while in the party.
To add Inez to your crew in Outer Worlds 2, head to the Ministry of Accuracy on the west coast of Paradise Island. From Fairfield, travel northwest – but be careful not to go too far north, or you’ll end up at the Skycutter power plant.
Navigate through the complex, defeating the Raptidons inside, until you find Inez in a nearby room. Speak with her, then proceed through the Ministry of Accuracy until you locate a terminal. Read the ‘Mental Refreshment’ notes on the terminal, and then leave the facility.
Go back to Fairfield, and Inez will show up. She’ll tell you she doesn’t want to work for Milverstreet anymore and will offer to join you as a friend and helper.
Aza
Associated Faction: Rift Cult
- Special Companion Ability: Spread the Message
- Effect: Aza uses her wrist-mounted explosive agent, firing an explosive charge in a cone towards the location. Enemies hit take heavy physical damage and are staggered.
- Other Special Abilities: Can hold up to two Companion Ability charges at once, and raises the bounty requirements to be considered an Outlaw while in the party.
In Outer Worlds 2, you can recruit Aza by traveling to Golden Ridge after dealing with the Vox Relay. Head to the Decommissioned Autonomous Extractorium, which is on the west side of town, south of the N-Ray range – it’s in the top-left area of the map.
Go inside the big warehouse and eliminate all the Rift Cultists. It’s a good idea to save your progress before you go in, just in case.
Once you’ve defeated all the cultists, head to the top floor on the west side of the building to free Aza. If you agree to help her track down the leader of a breakaway group from the Glorious Dawn cult, she’ll become a new member of your team.
Marisol
Associated Faction: The Order of the Ascendant
- Special Companion Ability: Torpifying Blast
- Effect: Using a gadget of her own design, she shoots energy at a specified target, stunning and shwoering them with magnetic energy. While the effect lasts, the target cannot move and all attacks against the target are critical hits.
- Other Special Abilities: Restores Gadget Energy whenever you (or a companion) kills a target, and displays additional information about enemies while targeting them with the N-Ray Scanner while she is in the party.
To add Marisol to your crew in Outer Worlds 2, you’ll need to progress through the main story on Golden Ridge until the Abbott asks you to look into something happening at a local Zyranium factory. When you first reach Golden Ridge, you’ll witness a Zyranium warhead explode near an Auntie’s Choice settlement. Your task is to investigate who fired the missile from the factory, as the Order of the Ascendant didn’t authorize the attack.
Go to the location shown on your map, north of the refugee camp and Monastery. Once there, convince the people in charge to let you talk to Alva, a new member who’s gone missing. Then, go to the bottom of the factory and talk to Alva through the window. Be friendly and show her you believe her, help her with whatever she needs around the factory, and she’ll eventually tell you what happened.
Work with her to get revenge on the person truly responsible, and then Marisol will agree to join your group as a companion.
Tristan
Associated Faction:The Protectorate
- Special Companion Ability: Judgement
- Effect: Tristan charges at his target, ending the charge with a powerful blow. The target and enemies nearby take massive damage from the hit and are knocked away. Additionally, all enemies in a moderate range around Tristan are taunted by him.
- Other Special Abilities: May randomly reveal hidden objects that would normally be concealed (without the Observation skill) while he remains in the party.
If you want Tristan to join your crew in Outer Worlds 2, you’ll first need to get the coordinates for Free Market Station, which is where the Sub Rosa group is based. You can do this by helping Emeline Galloway in the greenhouse at Fairfield. She’ll ask you to erase some Sub Rosa data from a computer terminal nearby, and once you do, she’ll share the coordinates with you.
Head to the 2nd Choice bar – it’s straight ahead from the landing pad, along the path leading to the market. You’ll find Tristan having an argument with the bartender. Talk to both of them, and then agree to a favor: the bartender wants you to check out a camp on Golden Ridge. Once you do that, he’ll let you speak with the Broker alongside Tristan.
Head to the camp shown on your map and find Tristan waiting nearby. Explore the camp, using your abilities to figure out what happened during the attack, and then share what you’ve learned with Tristan. After that, go back to the bartender, and then head downstairs to speak with the Broker.
Once you finish this conversation, you’ll be able to ask Tristan to travel with you. Keep in mind that because he belongs to the Protectorate, some of your other companions on The Incognito might not get along with him.
