As a dedicated fan of the Call of Duty franchise who has witnessed the highs and lows of its campaigns over the years, I am cautiously optimistic about what Black Ops 6 might bring to the table. Raven Software’s work on Black Ops Cold War’s story mode was nothing short of impressive, and if they can manage to replicate that level of quality in the upcoming sequel, we are in for a treat.

For some time, the campaigns in the Call of Duty series haven’t been as successful compared to other aspects. However, there have been numerous outstanding single-player missions within this franchise throughout its history. Despite experiencing a few controversial missions, Call of Duty has also delivered an abundance of exceptional campaign moments spanning from heart-pounding action sequences to quiet, strategic stealth scenes. Fingers crossed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will offer some memorable single-player experiences as well.

Raven Software is spearheading the development of the campaign for ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’, and given its impressive work on the storyline of ‘Black Ops Cold War’, fans can rest assured they’re in capable hands. The 2020 release of ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’ offered some of the most impactful campaign moments in recent years for the series, and based on the pre-release trailers for ‘Black Ops 6’, it seems some of these striking concepts might make a reappearance this year. One chilling scene from the trailers for ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’ appears to reference one of the best missions in ‘Cold War’, although it may be challenging for the sequel to top it.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Will Have a Tough Time Topping Cold War’s Break on Through Mission

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Break on Through Mission is One of CoD’s Best

In most instances throughout the long-standing series of Call of Duty games, the missions have been highly linear, requiring players to adhere to a strict sequence of tasks set by an AI character and progressing the story with each completed objective. Therefore, when a mission in a Call of Duty game offers more player autonomy, it generates excitement. Notably, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War featured many missions that provided this increased freedom, with “Break on Through” being one of its standout examples.

Commencing the climactic phase of “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War” elegantly, the mission titled Break on Through puts players in charge of the enigmatic figure, Bell, who finds himself bound to a chair and administered psychoactive substances. As these drugs kick in, the shady leader of a covert CIA faction, Russell Adler, prompts Bell to reminisce about his past experiences in Vietnam. This triggers a flashback mission with some mind-bending implications for reality.

During the adventure, it’s unveiled that Bell has undergone sophisticated mind control. Adler aims to untangle Bell’s confused thoughts and discover the location of the villain’s nuclear hideout. The game skillfully incorporates Bell’s mental distress into the mission mechanics, as deviating from Adler’s instructions causes the surroundings, enemies, weapons, allies, and even time of day to shift, reflecting Bell’s disordered state of mind. This creates a somber, ominous ambiance that resonates with the Black Ops series’ affinity for psychological terror.

How Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Could Improve on Break on Through’s Formula

Before Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was officially unveiled following the Xbox Showcase Direct, it dropped a few cryptic trailers that hinted at government deceit and paranoia. The “Open Your Eyes” trailer combined this atmosphere with some unsettling horror visuals, and for a moment, I thought I saw a mannequin in pink struggling to pin down the main character. It looks like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 might offer another mind-bending, twisted mission for us gamers to explore.

To distinguish itself from the Break on Through mission in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, the reality-twisting mission in Black Ops 6 needs to push the boundaries of psychological terror even more. Additionally, it should offer a wider range of choices and gameplay options to foster multiple replay opportunities.
