World of Warcraft: Midnight’s Devourer Demon Hunter Checks Off a Big Item from Players’ Wish Lists

Demon Hunter players have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion. Void Elves will finally be able to play as Demon Hunters, and they’ll gain access to a unique new specialization called the Devourer. Unlike the existing Havoc and Vengeance specializations, the Devourer is a mobile, mid-range fighter that focuses on ranged attacks. Players can try out the Devourer specialization when the pre-patch for World of Warcraft: Midnight arrives, currently scheduled for January 20, 2025.

What really sets the Devourer Demon Hunter apart is its striking new look. Instead of the usual green flames, it uses Void-themed colors like blues and purples. This complete visual change gives the Devourer a unique style that Blizzard should explore with other Demon Hunter options in the future.

The Unique Look of WoW: Midnight’s Devourer Demon Hunter

What Makes the Devourer Demon Hunter in World of Warcraft: Midnight So Special?

Many classes offer unique gameplay depending on how you specialize. A great example is the Druid: both Balance and Feral Druids deal damage, but Balance Druids are ranged spellcasters using sun and moon magic, while Feral Druids are close-combat fighters who transform into a cat, similar to a Rogue. Similarly, the Devourer drastically alters how Demon Hunters play. Instead of being a melee fighter, it turns them into a fast-moving mage who can cast spells on the go, briefly engaging in close combat and focusing on maintaining their Metamorphosis transformation for as long as possible.

What truly makes the Devourer specialization stand out is its distinct visual overhaul. Abilities such as Metamorphosis, Immolation Aura, and Imprison all have updated effects, icons, and names, moving away from the traditional green color associated with Demon Hunters. This even extends to the Fel-Scarred Hero Talent, which is renamed Void-Scarred for Devourers and features new artwork and node names.

Similar changes have happened before – for instance, Destruction Warlocks in World of Warcraft see their Shadow Bolt ability turn into Incinerate. However, the complete overhaul of the Devourer Demon Hunter is a brand new experience for World of Warcraft, and we hope to create more transformations like this in the future.

World of Warcraft Should Double Down on Devourer’s Modified Visuals

The new look for the Devourer Demon Hunter is a test version of a feature many players have been asking for: class skins. While characters with the same abilities will largely play the same way, players want more options to customize how those abilities look. They’d like to be able to change the visual effects of spells to reflect their character’s story, background, or personal style. Some popular ideas for class skins in World of Warcraft that players have suggested over time include:

  • Survival Hunter with no bombs/guns/gadgets
  • Shadow Priest with no Void tentacles
  • Monks with more default combat stances based on the August Celestials
  • Evokers with Shadowflame
  • Solar or lunar Paladins and Priests
  • Outlaw Rogues with fewer (or more) guns
  • Warlock with necromancy spells and undead summons
  • Balance Druids who focus on just solar or lunar magic
  • Shadowlands Covenant-themed Death Knights

World of Warcraft has experimented with visual customizations before. The best example is the Green Fire questline from the Mists of Pandaria expansion, which changed the color of a Warlock’s spells. While the Glyph system and some Hero Talents also allow for ability modifications, these options aren’t used very often, and fans haven’t seen many new Glyphs added in recent expansions.

Non-player characters (NPCs) have sometimes used abilities that are visually altered versions of those available to players. For example, the Priestesses of the Moon in the “Reclaimation of Gilneas” questline from World of Warcraft: Dragonflight used a modified version of the player ability Lunar Wrath.

While the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands expansion eventually lost players, it initially brought many back thanks to a major update to character customization options, demonstrating how important personalized appearances are to the World of Warcraft community. Whether it’s through features like Glyphs, unique quests like the Warlock’s Green Fire, or special class options like the Devourer Demon Hunter, World of Warcraft should continue to offer players even more ways to personalize their characters and enhance their gaming experience.
