How to Walk Over Poison Without Getting Hurt in Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake

In Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake, you’ll find purple swamp tiles while exploring Alefgard. Stepping on these tiles causes a little bit of damage to your hero. However, it is possible to cross them without getting hurt, and this guide will show you how!

Players won’t be able to walk across swamp tiles without getting hurt until they’re fairly far into the story of Dragon Quest 1. You’ll generally need to reach Level 30 or higher and equip the Hero with good gear before you can safely cross them. So, for much of the early and mid-game, you’ll just have to accept taking damage from the swamp’s poison tiles.

Erdrick’s Armour is the Key

As a huge Dragon Quest fan, I remember being so relieved when I finally got Erdrick’s Armour! You absolutely need it to walk across those tricky purple tiles without losing health. It doesn’t just protect you from the purple tiles, swamps, and electrified floors either – it actually heals you a little bit with every step! Plus, it makes you way more resistant to spells and dragon breath. If you want to know how to get it, I’ll tell you, but be warned – reading on might spoil some of the fun of discovering it yourself!

Beat the Knight Aberrant

You can obtain Erdrick’s Armour by defeating the Knight Aberrant, a tough enemy located inside Damdara. Damdara is in the southwestern part of Alefgard, between the Faerie Village and the Citadel of the Monarch of Medals – you can find its exact location on the map. Once inside Damdara, head to the small alcove in the center, past the swampy area, to start the battle with the Knight Aberrant.

There are multiple strategies for beating the Knight Aberrant, and here’s one approach players can use.

  1. Get Dragon Quest‘s Hero to Level 30+ before initiating the fight.
  2. Make sure your equipment is current. This means having things like the Siren Sword, Dragon Shield, Phantom Mask, and Dragon Mail.
  3. Use the Dodgy Dance ability first thing. Keep refreshing this ability throughout the fight so that its effect is always active.
  4. Prioritize healing, making sure to stay above 210 HP. When you are under the effects of the Knight Aberrant’s defense debuff, you should stay above 275 HP. Dragon Quest 1‘s Moreheal spell is extremely helpful here.
  5. Chip away at the enemy’s health with standard Attacks.

This strategy works well, but you might need to try a few times to beat the Knight Aberrant, as it can perform powerful combinations of attacks. After you defeat the knight, interact with the glowing spot that appears to get Erdrick’s Armour.
