Red Dead Redemption 2 is widely considered one of the best video games of all time. It’s a truly memorable experience, offering players a vast, moving, and deeply engaging story set during the final years of the Wild West, when the days of outlaws were coming to an end.
Dan Houser, a co-founder of Rockstar Games, recently revealed that the development of Red Dead Redemption 2 faced serious challenges. The game went so far over budget and fell so behind schedule that the team began to lose confidence in its success.
Red Dead Almost Died
Dan Houser recently spoke with Lex Fridman in a lengthy, three-hour interview about his time at Rockstar Games and what led to his departure in 2020. He discussed his experiences with the famous studio and his life after resigning.
Houser and Fridman then discussed Red Dead Redemption 2, the hugely popular 2018 open-world game known for its realistic details, compelling story, and memorable characters.
Despite becoming an incredibly successful and award-winning game that continues to sell well, the development of Red Dead Redemption 2 faced significant challenges. Dan Houser recently told Fridman that the game nearly failed.
With Red Dead Redemption 2, we fell behind on our timeline and significantly exceeded our budget – it was a difficult situation to even contemplate.
It was a really stressful time. I was working on a game about a cowboy with tuberculosis, and it just wasn’t coming together as planned. Naturally, a lot of people started to question whether it would work, which wasn’t a great feeling.
Houser paused to commend his former colleagues, emphasizing that their work on Red Dead Redemption 2 was extraordinary. The game remains highly regarded and frequently discussed even now.
The Western setting and its associated ideas worked really well for the project. Plus, the gunfights and horses were amazing. It all came together because of the team’s skill, their dedication, and the quality of the source material.
