As a long-time connoisseur of the Soulsborne series, I must say that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree has been an exhilarating journey, filled with fresh landscapes, formidable foes, and tantalizing treasures. However, like a well-cooked steak left on the grill for too long, the ending feels slightly overdone.
This article contains spoilers for Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It has been a little while since Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree was released, and everyone not put off by its difficulty is steadily approaching its conclusion. Many dedicated tarnished have already cleared out its new roster of regions, dungeons, and bosses, and are potentially experiencing the base game again with the DLC’s new equipment. While it has had some ups and downs, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree has been a fairly positive experience for the massive Elden Ring community, and has sold exceedingly well for a FromSoftware game in its own right.
Just as every tale has an end, the game titled “Shadow of the Erdtree” is no exception, and it seems that this conclusion has caused a bit of a hurdle for many players. The discussion about the enigmatic identity and challenge level of the final boss in “Shadow of the Erdtree” has been widespread, but some gamers also point out that the ending feels quite sudden. It’s accurate to say that it lacks the expansive side-quest element found in certain other FromSoftware DLCs, and the developers have confirmed that the storyline for “SotE” would not be woven into the main narrative of “Elden Ring“. However, a touch more closure might have been appreciated, and another unanticipated game from FromSoftware illustrates how this could have been achieved.
Sekiro’s Special Shura Ending Explained
Among the Soulslike series by FromSoftware, only Demon’s Souls and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice do not have downloadable content expansions. Demon’s Souls was released before FromSoftware typically introduced DLC, while Sekiro launched in the midst of this trend, receiving some post-launch updates but no full DLC expansion. While these additions were well-received, a full Sekiro DLC, perhaps exploring the Interior Ministry’s realm or the Divine Dragon’s home, would have been even more satisfying. Additionally, Sekiro offered some of the most diverse alternate endings in FromSoftware’s catalog, and it would have been intriguing to see Shadow of the Erdtree incorporate something like its Shura Ending.
How A Shura Ending Fits Into Shadow of the Erdtree
As a dedicated gamer immersed in the world of Elden Ring, I can’t help but ponder over the potential inclusion of a ‘Shura Ending’ akin to what we experienced in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This alternate path would branch off from the main quest based on a crucial dialogue choice, leading us towards an unambiguous bad ending, which, as far as FromSoftware is concerned, is quite unprecedented.
Adapting Shura’s Twist Ending To Elden Ring’s DLC
In the DLC of the game Elden Ring, the character you play as, known as Tarnished, interacts with Miquella’s devotees. These non-player characters (NPCs) in Elden Ring have their individual side missions and objectives. The way you handle these NPCs determines the number of allies or enemies you’ll face during the second-to-last boss battle, as well as which summons are available to confront Radahn afterwards. However, some of these interactions could take an unexpected turn – a Shura twist. Finishing Leda’s quest and eliminating all rebellious members from her group might make you an ally in the subsequent invasion, or even solidify your position as a follower of Miquella, thereby skipping that battle entirely.
A Shura Path Could Drastically Change SotE’s Finale
What happens next is when things could get nuts, as allowing Miquella or the player to gain any sort of permanent power in the Land of Shadow implies big changes to the conclusion of Elden Ring. The Tarnished could be forced into a boss fight against St. Trina that decides whether Miquella truly ascends, or there could be an option to step into the Gate of Divinity and challenge Miquella for the right to godhood. At that point, Shadow of the Erdtree could have become an alternate ending to Elden Ring itself, making for a fittingly epic ending to FromSoftware’s largest game yet.
