As a long-time gaming enthusiast with memories of the seventh console generation still fresh in my mind, I can confidently say that September and October 2024 are shaping up to be the best months for retro gamers since… well, since the last time we got a wave of remasters! The upcoming releases of beloved titles like Lollipop Chainsaw RePop, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, Epic Mickey Rebrushed, Sonic X Shadow Generations, and Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered are not just a nostalgia trip, but a testament to the timeless appeal of these games.

Having lasted from the mid-2000s to the early 2010s, the seventh console generation was an exciting period in gaming history. This era marked the debut of the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii, three massively successful home consoles that all cultivated devoted fanbases. Each of these platforms had its own strengths and weaknesses, but they played major roles in gaming history for varying reasons. The Xbox 360 revolutionized online gaming and introduced features on consoles like achievements and digital distribution, while the PlayStation 3 featured Blu-ray capabilities and an extensive catalog of diverse exclusives. The Wii, on the other hand, popularized the concept of motion controls and introduced a new, more casual audience to the world of video games.

The seventh console generation was defined by its catalog of high-quality games, from hit titles like Grand Theft Auto 4, Wii Sports, and Halo 3 to hidden gems like Puppeteer, Mirror’s Edge, and Vanquish. Although many of these games have been ported to modern platforms over the years, some of them are sadly still stuck on seventh-generation consoles to this day. Fortunately, several titles from this era that weren’t ported to PS4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and/or PC, will finally be brought over to these systems later this year, specifically in September and October. These two months, in particular, will be huge for fans of seventh-generation consoles, as they’ll see the release of a plethora of remasters and remakes of games from this period.

September and October 2024 Are Filled With Remasters of Seventh-Generation Games

Three Big Remasters Are Launching This September

On September 12, 2024, the series of seventh-generation reboots begins with the release of Lollipop Chainsaw RePoP. This eagerly anticipated hack-and-slash game is a revamped version of the beloved 2012 original, created by Suda51 from No More Heroes and James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy. Originally available only on Xbox 360 and PS3, this new RePop edition will expand its reach to Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Furthermore, it promises additional gameplay enhancements, new player character costumes, and other exciting features.

Approximately one week following the debut of RePoP, Capcom plans to unveil the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster on September 19, accessible on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. While the original Dead Rising has been widely available on contemporary systems for close to a decade, the idea of remastering such a game might appear superfluous at first glance. However, contrary to its title, the DRDR is less about refining existing elements and more about a comprehensive overhaul, as it introduces significant improvements not only in visuals but also gameplay mechanics.

Apart from these two titles, another remastered game, “Epic Mickey Rebrushed,” is planned for release on September 25th this month. As the title implies, it’s essentially a refreshed version of the 2010 3D platformer “Epic Mickey,” which was originally exclusive to the Wii. Despite its sequel appearing on other consoles, “Epic Mickey” remained a Wii exclusive. Now, after more than 13 years since its initial release, it’s finally coming to all contemporary gaming platforms in 2024.

Two More Remasters Are Coming Out in October

The seventh-generation remasters series persists into October with the debuts of “Sonic X Shadow Generations” and “Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered,” scheduled for October 25th and 31st respectively. Among these, “Sonic X Shadow Generations” is a collection bundle, while “Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered” is essentially a re-release with minimal changes.

For quite some time now, games like “Lollipop Chainsaw” and “Shadows of the Damned”, which belong to the seventh generation, have been hard to find on modern gaming systems. Therefore, their recent re-release on contemporary platforms is not just beneficial for ease of access, but also crucial for the preservation of these games themselves.
