This upcoming project from the acclaimed developer has sparked much curiosity and speculation, but a first-person game would mark a significant departure for Naughty Dog, as they have exclusively produced third-person games until now.
Despite Naughty Dog being widely recognized as one of the most illustrious PlayStation in-house studios, there’s been a noticeable drop in public enthusiasm towards the company in recent times. This can be attributed to the divisive response to The Last of Us Part 2 in 2020, the continued release of remasters and re-imaginings since then, the cancellation of The Last of Us Online project in late 2023, and a general lack of information about upcoming projects from Naughty Dog. However, studio head Neil Druckmann has hinted at the development of The Last of Us Part 3, as well as an unspecified new project that is rumored to be released prior to the third installment.
For a while now, there’s been talk that Naughty Dog’s secret project could be an entirely new intellectual property (IP), marking the studio’s first foray into this territory since 2013’s “The Last of Us”. So far, information about this elusive game has been sparse. However, a recent job posting by Naughty Dog hints at it possibly featuring a first-person perspective. A recent job listing for a game designer position at the studio mentions expertise in “third person or first person” action-adventure games as an added skill for their “brand-new single player game”. This has sparked curiosity among fans about Naughty Dog potentially deviating from its tradition of third-person games, which it’s been following for its 40-year history.
