Obsidian Confirms Sequel To Outer Worlds In Development

Highlights

  • The Outer Worlds 2 is confirmed, set in a different star system with a new crew.
  • Obsidian considered canceling the sequel during the early years of the pandemic.
  • The original team is working on Outer Worlds 2, aiming to replicate the quirky spirit of the original Outer Worlds.

As a die-hard fan of The Outer Worlds, I can hardly contain my excitement upon hearing that Obsidian Entertainment is still pushing through with the development of its sequel despite the initial setbacks brought about by the pandemic. It’s a testament to the passion and determination of the team that they decided to stay the course and ensure the game remains true to the original vision, rather than abandoning it like a lost spaceship drifting aimlessly through the cosmos.

According to the latest conversation, the head of Obsidian Entertainment, Feargus Urquhart, has verified that the follow-up for The Outer Worlds game is still under production. Interestingly enough, there were rumors suggesting it might have been close to being scrapped.

The upcoming game titled “The Outer Worlds 2” was initially revealed back in 2021. At the time of this announcement, specific details about the sequel were limited, only mentioning that it will unfold in a distinct star system and feature a new team of characters.

In a recent chat, Urquhart disclosed that the sequel wasn’t always a certainty. During the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, the developers of Obsidian Entertainment contemplated abandoning the sequel to The Outer Worlds and instead focusing their team on working on Avowed.

During a challenging phase for Obsidian, the possibility of abandoning the project emerged due to difficulties in understanding their new role as an acquired studio and managing multiple assignments simultaneously.

Rather than abandoning Outer Worlds 2 at this time, Obsidian opted to persevere and accepted postponements in its release date to keep the games in line with their initial concept.

The Outer Worlds 2 Development Confirmed

In discussing The Outer Worlds 2’s progression, Urquhart elaborated on the development process linking Avowed with its successor. He emphasized the significance of making sure that Avowed delivers as intended and simultaneously focusing on the sequel’s development.

A partially permeable barrier exists, connecting ‘Avowed’ and ‘The Outer Worlds 2’. This allows us to offer our support directly to the development team for both games.

Regarding the team behind The Outer Worlds 2, it has been confirmed that the lead programmer will be the same person as before, Leonard Boyarsky continues in his role as creative director, and Brandon Adler takes on the position of game director.

The team also includes Matt Singh, who formerly worked as a tester on Fallout: New Vegas and works as the head of gameplay and content for Outer Worlds 2.

Will Outer Worlds 2 Build On The Original?Obsidian Confirms Sequel To Outer Worlds In Development

By retaining the team behind the initial “The Outer Worlds” game, we hope to preserve the unique, vibrant atmosphere that the original RPG provided – a space-western experience much like “Fallout: New Vegas” and the beloved television show “Firefly.”

According to Urquhart, it was confirmed that Outer Worlds 2 is being created using the Unreal Engine. This is alongside unique tools developed by Obsidian within the Unreal Engine, which help distinguish Obsidian games from others built on this widely-used game engine.

In its initial release, The Original Outer Worlds garnered a blend of positive and negative criticisms. Some players felt that the satire was overly self-absorbed, or that the role-playing game (RPG) structure was too predictable, while others recognized its potential but desired a more daring approach, with the game taking bigger risks.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been hooked on Outer Worlds, despite the mixed opinions. If Outer Worlds 2 manages to amplify the original’s charm, deliver a cohesive narrative, and provide ample opportunities for exploration, it’s bound to be a triumph for Obsidian, satisfying those of us who believe in its potential.
