As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that Anor Londo in Dark Souls is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s like stepping into a symphony where each note, every echo, and the very atmosphere itself tell a tale as old as time.

15 years after its debut on seventh-generation gaming platforms, the classic game Dark Souls continues to stand as one of the most significant titles of the 2010s, leaving a lasting impact on the industry. Even following the release of FromSoftware‘s groundbreaking and award-winning game Elden Ring, many enthusiasts still consider Dark Souls as the peak achievement of the studio. The director (and president) of FromSoftware, Hidetaka Miyazaki, is often seen as having reached his masterpiece with this title. Although the mechanics and gameplay of FromSoftware’s titles have certainly evolved over time, Dark Souls maintains its dominance in terms of atmosphere and level design, which harmoniously blend together to create an unparalleled experience in Anor Londo.

In the heart of a Dark Souls adventure lies Anor Londo, a pivotal location rich in game lore. Reaching this place is like earning a hard-fought prize for surviving the tough sequence of The Depths, Blighttown, and Sen’s Fortress. After defeating the Iron Golem, players are transported to the final city, where they can experience one of Dark Souls‘ most memorable exits, along with some of its toughest foes and a legendary boss battle. Among all FromSoftware games, no area can match Anor Londo in terms of design and ambiance.

Anor Londo’s Interconnected Corridors and Vast Size Still Influence Other Legacy Dungeons

After navigating through three confined, hazardous areas teeming with Basilisks’ curses, poisonous swamps, and boulder challenges, the peaceful grandeur of Anor Londo offers a refreshing contrast, like transitioning from a harrowing journey through hell to a tranquil sanctuary. This area, being a hub and link to significant locations in Dark Souls, mirrors the intricate web of connections that defines the game’s expansive world.

If gamers manage to conquer the tough adversaries they’ll encounter in Anor Londo, they’ll find that this area intricately intertwines with itself in innovative ways, linking various sections of the city seamlessly, a design approach that still stands as a benchmark for FromSoftware’s labyrinthine layouts. Although it didn’t boast many traditional dungeons, the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC in Elden Ring showcases some of the studio’s finest dungeon design, and it’s hard not to think of Anor Londo while navigating Belurat or the Shadow Keep. One of the joys of a well-designed dungeon is uncovering secret paths and hidden spots, and Anor Londo offers numerous rewards for those who meticulously explore the expansive city.

Anor Londo is the Thematic and Literal Peak of Dark Souls

Besides serving as a refreshing change after three heavily oppressive regions, Anor Londo stands as a significant milestone within the game Dark Souls, and a place where many believe the game reaches its peak of excellence. Granted, there are numerous impressive moments in store for players in the second half of the game (such as Ash Lake, the Painted World of Ariamis, and Oolacile Township), but the emotional impact of traversing the lowest depths of Lordran only to ascend to its literal summit is not easily forgotten by most gamers. The climactic battle against Ornstein and Smough serves as a fitting finale to the players’ initial visit to this iconic location.

The fight against Ornstein and Smough remains a strong contender for the best boss not just in Dark Souls but across the entire FromSoftware catalog. Given the pedigree of FromSoftware’s boss enemies, that praise doesn’t come lightly. Even the normal enemy encounters in Anor Londo shift the player’s focus from fending off gank mobs to singular, one-on-one fights against stronger enemies that are begging to be parried, preparing them for the ultimate challenge Anor Londo hosts. Return visits to Anor Londo (both in Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3) do little to lessen the area’s impact, elevating it to an exemplar of FromSoftware’s level design almost without peer.
