As a die-hard fan of Attack on Titan since its inception, I wholeheartedly agree with this list and would like to add my two cents. The opening for Season 1, Part 2, “Die Flügel der Freiheit” with the song “Jiyuu no Tsubasa,” holds a special place in my heart. Having watched the series multiple times, I can still vividly recall the thrill of the first-person perspective during the ODM gear scenes, which truly encapsulated the exhilaration and danger that comes with fighting Titans.

The anime series “Attack on Titan” is renowned as one of the greatest of all time, and rightly so. Its grand battles, profound character development, and overall quality make it a delight to watch. Each season boasts unique opening sequences that are often hailed among the top-notch OPs in the anime world, thanks to their captivating visuals and energetic song selections.

In the grand scheme of things, the captivating series known as “Attack on Titan” unfolded across a total of four seasons, comprising 87 standard episodes and a couple of specials for good measure. Each opening theme song for AoT has its unique charm and panache, with some resonating more deeply with fans than others due to their catchy tunes and memorable presentation.

8 Season 4, Part 1 (Episodes 60–75): “My War”

In Season 4 Part 1, some of the series’ most outstanding episodes are presented. Regrettably, the opening theme fails to live up to their grandeur. Although “My War” by Noko stands out among other Attack on Titan theme songs, it is accompanied by relatively ordinary action scenes that are vibrant and abstract. These visuals are aesthetically pleasing, but they don’t reveal much beyond unspecific soldiers fighting in a battlefield setting.

The intro isn’t bad by any means, it just lacks the personal connection that other openings boast. This does make sense, considering that the beginning of the season follows new characters, but the cinematic doesn’t bring out strong emotions like the best Attack on Titan intros.

There will always be something nostalgic about a beloved anime’s first-season opener. This certainly rings true with Attack on Titan, as these scenes marked some of the first animated action fans ever saw from this critically acclaimed anime.

While the initial sequence may not have aged as gracefully as other opening themes, it might bring to mind for viewers how far the animation has progressed since then. However, “Guren no Yumiya” remains a fantastic tune that encapsulates the magic of the first season, and it stands out as the best part of this specific opener.

Although “Attack on Titan” isn’t exactly mysterious, “Saigo no Kyojin” might be an exception. The anime ended in 2023 with two extended episodes, each about an hour long, without new opening songs. So, the final opening song for “Attack on Titan,” “The Rumbling,” was probably the last one many viewers heard. However, these specials were divided into seven additional standard 20-minute episodes on Japanese streaming platforms. Since they contain the same content as the specials, there’s no real need to watch them. Nevertheless, episodes 88–94 feature a new opening and ending song.

Returning to Linked Horizon, “Saigo no Kyojin” is essentially a tribute to the entire series and particularly its opening themes. Skipping over an initial gentle introduction, the lively and spirited tune echoes their earlier works and incorporates direct references to many of the previous openings (even those not by Linked Horizon). The visuals primarily recall Attack on Titan‘s journey, featuring scenes from as far back as season 1. Given that most viewers had probably already watched the specials, this opening seemed more focused on honoring AoT‘s legacy rather than crafting a piece that perfectly captures the mood of the final episodes.

In the third season of Attack on Titan, the storyline delved deeper into the world’s backstory. To complement this evolution, an opening cinematic titled “Red Swan” was introduced. Notably, this sequence, along with the entire OP, highlights the character development that viewers have witnessed over many hours of investment. This thoughtful addition is quite endearing.

Apart from the thrill of witnessing scenes showing a young Levi armed with a knife, it’s worth noting that this recurring element remains captivating, given his transformation into one of the mightiest characters in the world of Attack on Titan. Combine these visuals with the enchanting music by Yoshiki and Hyde, and you have a truly iconic opening sequence for Attack on Titan.

As a dedicated fan of Attack on Titan, I can’t help but feel exhilarated about The Final Season Part 2. It has truly set the stage for an epic conclusion, and I was eagerly waiting for a powerful opening theme to match the intensity. Luckily, “The Rumbling” did not disappoint! This incredible track, coupled with visually stunning animations, underscores just how far our beloved characters have grown throughout this captivating anime series. To be more precise, the OP focuses on the remarkable transformation undergone by one character in particular: Eren.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice how Yeager dominates the spotlight in this opening sequence, almost entirely so. What truly stands out, though, is the early focus on Eren, a man burdened by the world’s fate and estranged from his community – the very group that once kept him anchored. The striking visual of Eren treading upon the wall is undeniably powerful, as are the chilling scenes depicting an endless horde of Titans.

In the third season, the episodes were divided into two halves, but the second opening theme stood out more. “Shoukei To Shikabane No Michi” takes precedence over “Red Swan” due to its catchy and memorable melody that is often associated with this anime. Moreover, the visuals are stunningly crafted, featuring slow-motion scenes reminiscent of legendary Scouts charging against the Beast Titan and other unforgettable moments such as Eren’s Attack Titan and Reiner’s Armored Titan finally facing off after much anticipation.

The opening scene expertly showcases some intense moments from previous episodes, and subtly suggests what lies ahead in season 3. Many fans consider this introduction to be one of the most impressive the series has produced, although it’s not universally regarded as the absolute best.

There is something chilling about the piano keys that start Season 2’s intro, a fitting pick considering Attack on Titan became considerably darker during this stretch of episodes. “Shinzou Wo Sasageyo” by Linked Horizon is just perfect for Season 2. Some of the shots used in the opening are gripping and poignant as well, such as the one that pans over all the heroes standing on the wall (and reveals the huge amount of vast and terrible Titan forces barreling their way).

Another point worth mentioning about this introduction is the visible pulsating hearts, red as roses, in both our leading characters and their adversaries. This might imply that, despite their apparent differences, they may not be as dissimilar as they seem – the members of the Survey Corps, who have committed heinous acts themselves, are no strangers to moral ambiguity.
