Gotham Knights Has the Perfect Blueprint For Another DC Team-Up Game

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who grew up reading the adventures of Young Justice, I can confidently say that the foundation laid by Gotham Knights has opened up a world of possibilities for a Young Justice game. While the initial reception of Gotham Knights may have been mixed, its focus on diverse characters and their unique abilities showcases the potential for an engaging team-based combat system in a Young Justice title.

Initially receiving criticism upon its October 2022 launch, the game “Gotham Knights” has garnered a Metacritic score of 67. Critics have expressed disappointment with the game’s combat, missions, and characters, finding them somewhat underwhelming when put alongside DC’s previous titles.

While there were some peculiarities in the main storyline of Gotham Knights, overall it was quite engaging. The unique playstyles of each hero allowed fans to explore and switch between them, offering a fun and dynamic experience. Beneath the more well-known problems with Gotham Knights lie solid foundations that could be built upon for another DC superhero team-up game, this time centered around Young Justice.

Gotham Knights Has Laid The Blueprints for a Young Justice Game

Young Justice Is an Ideal Pick for a Superhero Team-Up Game

For the first time, the Young Justice team, a group of superheroes, made their debut in “Young Justice: The Secret #1” published in June 1998. Created to bridge the gap as the Teen Titans moved away from their adolescent roles, the original members were Robin (Tim Drake), Superboy, and Flash’s sidekick Impulse. Together, they worked to free a new superhero named Secret from imprisonment. This collaboration turned out to be a hit, leading directly to the launch of Young Justice’s own comic series in September 1998.

Similar to any other superhero squad, Young Justice has had numerous members join and leave over the past few decades. Robin, Superboy, and Impulse have been constant members, but there have been many additions to the team such as Wonder Girl, Arrowette, Teen Lantern, and even a younger version of Lobo.

In creating a team-up video game featuring superheroes, the Young Justice series would offer an array of diverse abilities and skill sets for players to select. Compared to a Superman or Wonder Woman game, a Young Justice title could steer clear of contentious issues by portraying its heroes as less powerful due to their youth and inexperience, thereby maintaining comic book authenticity while allowing room for character growth.

A Young Justice Game Could Be a Direct Sequel to Gotham Knights

If DC or Warner Bros. choose to create a game, it could be that Young Justice serves as a continuation of Gotham Knights, blending both the gameplay and storyline elements. By the conclusion of Gotham Knights, the Bat-Family has assumed the public role of Gotham’s protectors. Since three pseudo-siblings are already handling matters, it would be fitting for Tim Drake’s Robin to join a new superhero team. Given that the version of Tim Drake in Gotham Knights is only 16 years old, he would be ideally suited for membership or leadership within the Young Justice team.

In terms of gameplay mechanics, a Young Justice video game could build upon the foundation laid by Gotham Knights, allowing players to control four main characters from the team. One frequent complaint about Gotham Knights was that the characters’ combat styles seemed quite similar, but since each member of the Young Justice squad possesses unique abilities, this disparity might not be as noticeable.
