Why The Elder Scrolls Needs to Focus on a Specific Region After TES 6

As a dedicated Elder Scrolls fan who’s been adventuring across Tamriel since the days of Daggerfall, I can’t help but feel a twinge of anticipation every time a new piece of information about The Elder Scrolls 6 drops. And while the Hammerfell rumors have me intrigued, there’s one location that’s been calling my name for decades: Elsweyr.

2018 marked the initial announcement of “The Elder Scrolls 6,” the eagerly anticipated new addition to Bethesda Game Studio’s renowned first-person shooter RPG fantasy series. Despite the official trailer release six years ago, there has been scant information or updates about The Elder Scrolls 6, leaving fans in the dark about its direction, plot, and potential release date. As Bethesda gears up to launch the primary DLC for their latest intellectual property, Starfield’s Shattered Space, eager TES enthusiasts are left guessing about when they might receive more insights into the sixth significant installment.

One of the assumptions backed by persistent rumors is that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be set in Hammerfell, as there were various prior hints and indications for this. Although not officially confirmed or denied, recent circumstantial evidence does seem to point to Hammerfell looking more likely as the setting for TES 6. While this would line up with previous expectations, it also leaves one of the most tantalizing locations of Tamriel still yet unexplored in a mainline release. As such, Bethesda should finally send fans to the area of Elsweyr in a future major title.

In The Elder Scrolls Online, a complete season chapter titled “Elsweyr” was introduced in 2019. However, it’s important to note that the events in ESO occur at an earlier point in Tamriel’s history compared to other games under the Elder Scrolls series, and they share a less direct connection with them.

After The Elder Scrolls 6, Elsweyr Must Be the Next Region Featured

Elsweyr Is Primed to Be the Next Major Setting After The Elder Scrolls 6

The region of Elsweyr has been a part of The Elder Scrolls‘ world since the beginning, and many of the details provided paint a picture of one that contains a deep well of potential for both story and gameplay. This is largely thanks to the lore and history of the Khajiit, the cat-like race native to Elsweyr, and their varied communities and culture. Bordering other major provinces, and with a topography that stretches from dense jungles to vast plains dotted with rocky mesas, Elsweyr contains a number of great design possibilities, and it has long held potential as an incredible setting for TES.

Why The Elder Scrolls ‘Owes’ Fans a Title Set in Elsweyr After TES 6

It seems that The Elder Scrolls 6 is not expected soon, and if the whispers about Hammerfell are correct, then we might wait even longer for Elsweyr to appear in a main game. However, there’s a chance TES 6 may not be set entirely in Hammerfell, which could mean Elsweyr could still show up in the game. In a similar manner, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim added a significant DLC called Dragonborn, which explored Solstheim, an island near Morrowind, where the third game is set. This offers a good example of how Bethesda might lead players to Elsweyr if it’s not part of TES 6 from the start.

Due to its rich history and connections to the distinctive cultures and faith of the Khajiit, Elsweyr offers a wealth of opportunities for engaging storylines and gameplay elements. Exploring the complexities of the Khajiit and the political landscape would not only enrich the game, but it could also inspire a variety of unique character designs and innovative features. After five main games spanning 30 years, if Elsweyr isn’t included in the sixth installment, it will be high time for The Elder Scrolls franchise to reward the world-building efforts invested in Elsweyr by making it the focus. This could happen through substantial DLC for The Elder Scrolls 6, or perhaps even a standalone spin-off game at some point in the future, but featuring Elsweyr more prominently in the next major release of the series seems long overdue.
