Final Fantasy 14 Once Again Targeted By DDoS Attacks

Players of Final Fantasy 14 are experiencing frequent disconnections due to ongoing DDoS attacks targeting the game’s servers. As of now, the attacks are mainly affecting the Aether, Primal, Crystal, and Dynamis data centers in North America.

A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is a harmful attempt to crash a server by overwhelming it with a huge amount of traffic. Attackers usually use a network of compromised devices – often called “bots” – to send a flood of fake requests to the target server. A single attacker can control this bot network and use it to disrupt service for real users. While it’s impossible to completely protect a server from a DDoS attack, some services, like Final Fantasy 14, can lessen the impact of the attack by filtering out the malicious traffic.

Final Fantasy 14’s North American Servers Targeted By DDoS Attack

Players of Final Fantasy 14 are once again experiencing disruptions due to a series of DDoS attacks. While the game has faced these types of attacks before, the current wave is causing disconnections and errors, particularly for those playing on the Aether, Crystal, Dynamis, and Primal data centers in North America. The attacks began on Monday, November 3rd, and briefly subsided before resuming late Tuesday, November 4th, around 11:24 PM Eastern Time. Players have been sharing their experiences and disconnection times on social media and the Final Fantasy 14 subreddit. The attacks continued through the night and, as of the latest reports at 1:40 PM Eastern Time on November 5th, are still impacting North American servers.

The recent DDoS attack on Final Fantasy 14 doesn’t seem to be impacting players in Europe, Japan, or Oceania. While Square Enix acknowledged the issue on November 4th, it’s still ongoing. This happened shortly after the game released its 7.35 update, which added the new Pilgrim’s Traverse dungeon and a crossover with Monster Hunter Wilds.

The recent DDoS attack unfortunately caused some players to lose their progress in Pilgrim’s Traverse, because disconnecting during a solo attempt means that progress is lost. As Final Fantasy 14 gets ready for its 7.4 update in December, it’s unclear how Square Enix will handle these attacks in the future.
