Another NetEase Studio, Bad Brain Games, Is Shutting Down After Two Years

NetEase is closing Bad Brain Game Studios on November 17th after deciding to stop funding the game the studio was developing. Studio head Sean Crooks announced the closure on social media, suggesting the game will likely never be released.

And get this – it’s also the same day Fantastic Pixel Castle, another NetEase studio, is shutting down. Talk about a rough day for gaming!

Crooks announced on LinkedIn that the studio is closing down, even after they tried hard to find someone to invest in it and keep the game going.

We gave this project our all, constantly challenging ourselves creatively and technically with a lot of passion and hard work. What we accomplished together really shows how talented this team is. The positive reaction to the project proves that creativity and dedication paid off. Although things didn’t turn out exactly as planned, I know we connected with players and others in the industry who believed in our vision. To everyone who supported the game, offered encouragement, and shared our excitement – thank you.

Bad Brain Game Studios launched in May 2023, led by Crooks, a producer known for his work on games like Watch Dogs: Legion. Their first project, Midnight Riders, is an open-world action-adventure game with a vibrant 1980s style. You can watch a short preview of the game, shared by Crooks, below.

For those interested, Crooks’ full statement can be found below, as well.

Sean Crooks Full Statement On Bad Brain Game Studios

It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of Bad Brain Game Studios, effective November 17th. Despite our best efforts, we haven’t been able to find a new partner to continue the project. We are incredibly thankful for the support of NetEase Games, which allowed us to explore every option. Our team worked passionately and creatively, and we’re proud of everything we accomplished together.

The positive response to our game shows how much dedication and imagination went into it. While we’re disappointed things didn’t work out as planned, we know we connected with players and others in the industry who believed in our vision. Thank you to everyone who supported us.

The game and its underlying technology are still available for acquisition or partnership, and we and NetEase are open to discussing opportunities with interested publishers or studios. We truly believe in the potential of this world and hope it will eventually reach players.

To help our talented team find new opportunities, we will be releasing a showcase reel of our work. If you’re looking for skilled developers, artists, and storytellers, please reach out – we’d be happy to connect you with them.

Finally, thank you to everyone who supported us. Your encouragement meant everything. Although this chapter is closing sooner than expected, the spirit of Bad Brain Game Studios will live on through the incredible people who made it possible.

Studio Head
