Battlefield 6’s lead producer has revealed how bots work in the game.
Battlefield 6’s bots have been a hot topic since the beta, with some players finding them frustratingly common and others appreciating the more relaxed matches they create. Recently, a new Casual Breakthrough mode was added, increasing the number of bots per game to 32. Now, the developers have explained exactly how these bots function within the game.
Battlefield 6 Bots ‘Only’ Appear for These Reasons
David Sirland, the lead producer for Battlefield 6, explained how bots will join and leave game lobbies. In a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), Sirland clarified the confusion around bots in the game. He stated that bots will only be added to standard playlists if a lobby is started by players and the pre-round countdown exceeds approximately 3 minutes. This will ensure servers are filled to the appropriate number of players.
Okay, so here’s how bots seem to pop up in regular playlists: if a lobby starts and it takes more than about 3 minutes to actually begin a match, that’s when bots will jump in. They fill the empty spots so the game can finally start, it seems!

Sirland suggests using 24 players on each team for modes like “CQ for ex”. This lets players start battling right away, even if there aren’t enough real opponents, because bots will fill in. Once players start joining, they’ll connect to a server with those bots already in it. For every new player who joins, one bot will leave, until the lobby is full with 24 players. After that, only real players can join.
The Alternative for Bots in Battlefield 6 is Waiting “Possibly Forever”
If the developers don’t use these helper bots in Battlefield 6, players in areas with few people might have to wait a very long time, potentially indefinitely, to find a game on their preferred playlist. Also, servers need bots initially to attract enough real players to fill up.
If you don’t want to potentially wait indefinitely to play on your preferred playlist in less populated areas, you’ll need to stick with the bots to get the first server up and running. Constantly leaving just because you see bots will prevent that from happening.

Sirland announced that they plan to experiment with increasing the time it takes for bots to activate in Battlefield 6. They also use “onboarding bots” to help new players in certain game modes. These onboarding bots are different from the standard bots because they remain in the game and make up a significant portion of each team’s players.
Good news for Battlefield 6 players: many of the game’s biggest issues have been resolved! The game has also been a commercial success, selling over 10 million copies.
