As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Westeros and Essos, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when reflecting upon the final season of Game of Thrones. The series that once captivated millions with its intricate plotlines, compelling characters, and epic battles concluded with a finale that left many fans, myself included, feeling disappointed.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say, the grand finale of Game of Thrones left me feeling a bit let down. The speed at which stories and characters were wrapped up seemed rushed, leading to an ending that didn’t quite hit the mark. However, Kit Harington, our beloved Jon Snow, has recently shared some insights into why the final season might have felt so hurried. Fans might find his explanation a tad more palatable.
The acclaimed series Game of Thrones, praised for its captivating narrative, stellar acting, and grandeur, experienced a shift in its later seasons. Specifically, seasons 7 and 8 reduced their episode count from the usual 10 to 7 and 6 respectively. This abbreviated format led to choices that seemed inconsistent with some beloved characters, such as Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen, as these characters’ storylines didn’t have enough time for comprehensive development. Many viewers believe the hasty conclusion of Game of Thrones was due to showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss focusing on their now-abandoned Star Wars project. However, Kit Harington suggests that the cast also played a role in the decision to wrap up the series swiftly.
In a conversation with GQ, Harington expressed bewilderment about the fan reactions to the Game of Thrones finale. He stated, “I used to be adored for Thrones; now I’m met with disapproval.” Feeling puzzled, he exclaimed, “What on earth is happening?!” Although Harington conceded that fans might have valid reasons to criticize the last season of Game of Thrones for being too hasty, he suggested that there may have been no other option but to bring the series to a swift conclusion because the cast was drained by then.
“In my opinion, one potential issue with the ending of ‘Thrones’ was that we were all so drained from the long series, we couldn’t sustain it any longer. Consequently, some viewers felt it was too hurried and I can see their point of view. However, I’m not certain there was another viable option. When I look at photos from the final season, I see a reflection of myself that appears exhausted and drained. I simply didn’t have the energy for another season.”
The final Game of Thrones episode is singled out for being among the worst TV series finales. Some creative decisions baffled or disappointed some fans, including Jon Snow killing Daenerys Targaryen and Bran Stark becoming the King of Westeros dispute being absent for the fifth season. Harington acknowledged the fan reactions to the Game of Thrones series finale as valid, admitting mistakes may have been made:
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think there were mistakes made, story-wise, towards the end maybe. I think there were some interesting choices that didn’t quite work.
Harington isn’t alone in expressing dissatisfaction with the way ‘Game of Thrones’ concluded, as Maisie Williams, who played Arya Stark, has revised her opinion on the show’s ending. Four years ago, she was content with Arya’s fate and considered the final episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ a fitting conclusion to a significant decade in her life. However, two years later, she admitted that the series “definitely lost its way towards the end,” despite a promising start. Similarly, Lord Varys actor Conleth Hill and Twyin Lannister actor Charles Dance have also voiced their disappointment with the ending of ‘Game of Thrones.’
Of course, not all cast members hated the Game of Thrones finale. Grey Worm actor Jacob Anderson defended the Game of Thrones finale, saying, “I didn’t have strong feelings about the finale. I think everybody assumes that we all hated it. That’s not the case at all.” Of course, nothing these actors say will likely change fans’ opinions and there’s no going back, despite some calling on HBO to remake the Game of Thrones ending. So, all fans can do is hope lessons were learned when it comes time to conclude the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon.
