Like all games, horror games offer a unique challenge – in this case, trying not to be too scared! But sometimes, these games focus more on difficulty than on actually frightening you.
Getting a Platinum Trophy in these horror games shows more than just how much time you’ve put in – it proves you’re a skilled player. Earning it often means completing incredibly difficult tasks, like finding every collectible, finishing the game multiple times on different difficulty levels, achieving high ranks, and overcoming a variety of other challenges. These are truly some of the hardest horror games to fully complete.
In the end, the only thing to fear isn’t the game itself, but the monumental tasks ahead of you.
While sites like PSN Profiles can show which horror games are hardest to get a Platinum trophy in, this list is based more on personal experience. Those numbers aren’t always accurate because they can be affected by how many people are playing the game and other things.
10. Silent Hill f
Not Me, Y’all Stay Safe
A lot of players are finding the trophies in the new Silent Hill game really challenging, especially if they’re aiming for the Platinum trophy. But I’ve actually earned the Platinum three times now – once on my main account, once on a family account, and just now on my sister’s account! I truly love this game; it’s incredibly meaningful to me and really connects with me on a personal level.
Despite not being a simple game, the real challenge comes from specific achievements and tough bosses. The hardest difficulty, called ‘Lost in the Fog’, is where the comparisons to notoriously difficult ‘Souls-like’ games come from – it’s incredibly demanding and can be frustratingly difficult to overcome.
Okay, so getting all the trophies in this game is rough. There are extra challenges with each boss – like beating Sakuko without getting hit by her bell – but thankfully you can knock those out on the Story difficulty. Then you’ve got all the collectibles – the Omamori, Ema Plates, and documents – to find. Honestly, I’d say you’re looking at at least five full playthroughs before you even think about getting that Platinum. And I say that as someone who’s Platinumed the Silent Hill 2 Remake three times – this game is easily the hardest one to fully complete, in my experience.
Even so, I’m already working on getting another account to Platinum rank in this game – it’s my fourth time doing so, actually! I’ve already started the process.
9. Resident Evil 4 Remake
Where Did S Rank Go? Bingo?
If you ask Resident Evil fans which game is the most challenging to fully complete and earn the Platinum trophy, you’ll likely hear Resident Evil 4 Remake or Resident Evil 3 Remake mentioned. While Nemesis in RE3 and Inferno mode in RE4 both make things incredibly difficult, I personally believe getting the Platinum in Resident Evil 4 is tougher.
The Resident Evil 4 Remake doesn’t just let you replay a beloved classic; it also evaluates your performance throughout the game. Achieving the top rank, S+, is incredibly difficult, but you’ll earn a trophy if you manage to do it.
Getting the Platinum trophy in this game is a real challenge. Beyond simply completing it, you’ll need to achieve a top rank on the hardest difficulty settings, find every collectible, master the shooting range, and complete numerous other tasks. It’s much harder than it sounds, particularly because the combat is actually more demanding in this remake than in the original game, especially on Professional difficulty.
Unlike the first game, Ashley Graham is a much more helpful companion in this one. You won’t have to worry about her slowing you down or getting in the way as much.
8. The Last of Us Part II
Grounded Difficulty is No Joke
The Last of Us Part II sharply divides players, but those who enjoy it are incredibly dedicated. By the time they earn a Platinum trophy, they’ve often had to overcome significant challenges, as Ellie transforms into a ruthless character throughout the game. It really takes a lot of perseverance to finish it.
This is mainly because rewards are linked to how challenging the game is, and Grounded mode is the most difficult.
The Last of Us has always been innovative in the survival horror genre, and while the first game’s Grounded mode was challenging but manageable, the sequel’s version is truly brutal. You’ll really feel like you’re constantly on the verge of defeat, facing incredibly intelligent and relentless enemies with almost no supplies.

7. Alien: Isolation
Nightmare Mode is a Literal Nightmare
Many of the hardest trophies to earn in horror games are tied to playing on the highest difficulty settings, and Alien: Isolation follows this trend with its “Nightmare” mode. As the name suggests, it’s incredibly challenging, as the alien enemy is constantly and aggressively searching for you.
There’s also a trophy for completing the game with Permadeath enabled, but you can choose any difficulty level for this, so the easiest one is recommended. It’s a good idea to try and earn as many trophies as you can in one playthrough to save time – otherwise, you’ll be playing for a long time!
Many games have trophies that demand you complete – or avoid – certain tasks before finishing, leaving you feeling exhausted and disoriented by the end, like you’ve just woken from a strange dream.
There’s also a trophy awarded for dying 100 or more times – a bit of a playful challenge! It might not be too difficult to earn over time, particularly if you try playing on the hardest difficulty, Nightmare mode.
6. Outlast 2
Going Insane
The Outlast games are incredibly challenging and will really test your courage. You’ll need to be brave and have strong nerves to beat the game even once, let alone multiple times to earn the Platinum trophy. And to make things even harder, Outlast II includes trophies that unlock based on the difficulty level you choose.
Playing Outlast II on Insane difficulty is incredibly challenging and genuinely unsettling. You’ll feel a real sense of desperation just trying to progress, and it creates some of the most terrifying and frustrating hide-and-seek gameplay you’ll ever experience.
It’s good news that you can earn all the trophies in under 20 hours if you’re efficient, but it requires some knowledge of the game. Most players will likely spend the bulk of their time on the Insane difficulty setting. And to make things even more challenging, your camera battery can’t be recharged at any point.
If the difficulty hasn’t sunk in yet, all I’ve got to say is “Good luck.”
5. Catherine
So Much to Complete
Horror often reflects deeper societal anxieties, using fear to explore issues relevant to the time and place it’s created. In this case, the story focuses on love and relationships, with a central character who is a succubus – a demon who embodies desire.
We’re not here to discuss how good the game’s story is, but how challenging it is to unlock the Platinum trophy. You need to unlock trophies for all 12 different endings, and on top of that, earn the “This is El Dorado” trophy by getting gold rank on every level for each ending. This means completing the game at least 12 times.
The Babel stages are particularly challenging, unlike the rest of the game. They force you to play carefully with only one life and no take-backs. Getting to Platinum requires completing a huge number of tasks – it can easily take almost 100 hours!
There’s a huge amount to do, which explains why getting Platinum is such a challenge.
4. The Quarry
Any Supermassive Game, Really
The developers of games like Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, Supermassive Games, are famous for creating challenging games to fully complete. But their latest title, The Quarry, is by far their most difficult to master.
A lot of players find that relentlessly pursuing the Platinum trophy in The Quarry actually detracts from the experience, often requiring dozens of playthroughs. It’s often not worth the frustration, as the game is enjoyable on its own and doesn’t need that extra stress.
As you’d expect from Supermassive Games, this game has trophies for absolutely everything – every choice, every ending, and every little detail. You’ll need to meticulously explore every inch of the game, and even a momentary lapse in attention – like missing a quick-time event – can send you back to the beginning.
3. Dead Space 2
Make Your 3 Saves Count
Okay, so limited saves in survival horror? That goes way back to the original Resident Evil with those ink ribbons and typewriters. But Dead Space 2 on Hard mode? That’s next level. You only get three saves total. Seriously! If you blow through those in the first hour, you’re basically playing a no-save run if you mess up. It really forces you to think carefully about when and where you hit those save stations, or you’re gonna have a bad time.
The enemies in this game are much smarter than they were in the original Dead Space. Ammunition is scarce, so you’ll need to rely heavily on your kinetic weapons, though even those aren’t always fully effective.
So, when you combine this with the three total saves, you’re in for a bad time.
My fiancé has become a really skilled speedrunner of this game. I’ve watched them play countless times, and even after years, they still haven’t managed to unlock all of the achievements – which really shows how challenging the game is!
2. Bloodborne
Well, It’s a Souls Game
I know Bloodborne isn’t strictly a horror game, but within the Souls-like genre, it’s incredibly atmospheric and heavily inspired by European folklore and Lovecraftian horror. And like other Souls games, it’s famously challenging, especially if you’re aiming for 100% completion.
Beyond the general challenge of the game, you’ll repeatedly encounter incredibly frustrating areas called Chalice Dungeons.
These optional dungeons aren’t required to beat the game, but they’re essential if you want to earn the Platinum trophy. You’ll need specific items dropped by bosses to access them, and those drops are random. The best time to tackle these dungeons is during New Game+ because that’s when the bosses will reliably drop the items you need.
Despite this, the game often feels deeply unfair. You’re usually facing overwhelming odds with very limited resources, creating a frustrating experience. It can get so challenging that it feels almost deliberately designed to make you lose your temper.
You could repeatedly play a specific Chalice Dungeon created by another player to earn an endless supply of Blood Echoes, but hopefully you wouldn’t resort to that, would you?
1. The Evil Within
Akumu Mode Just Hurts
The Evil Within is notoriously difficult to earn a Platinum trophy, and it’s arguably one of the hardest games overall to fully complete, mainly due to the challenging Akumu mode.
Let me tell you, Akumu mode in The Evil Within is brutal. It’s the hardest difficulty, and it’s seriously frustrating because one single hit, any hit, and you’re dead. Seriously, it doesn’t matter how skilled you are, you’re going to be staring at the game over screen constantly, especially during boss fights or when you’re swarmed. Half the time, you won’t even see the attack that kills you – but Sebastian definitely feels it, and he’s down for the count.
Unlocking this mode is simple – just finish the game once. However, completing it is incredibly difficult. If you’re aiming for one of the most challenging Platinum trophies in horror games, pacing yourself is key – take frequent breaks. You might even need a long break from the game after you finish!
But once you do, all other trophies are a breeze, and that perfect Platinum is all yours.
