As a long-time fan of the Marvel Universe and Daredevil in particular, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming series, “Daredevil: Born Again.” Having followed Matt Murdock’s journey since its inception on Netflix, I must admit that the prospect of a more violent and darker tone is both thrilling and terrifying.

The narrative of the visually impaired vigilante Matt Murdock, famously known as Daredevil, will carry on in the storyline titled “Daredevil: Born Again,” six years following its termination on Netflix. One of the actors returning to his role from the original “Daredevil” series hinted that the upcoming Disney Plus streaming show could be significantly more brutal.

The series “Daredevil,” featuring Charlie Cox in the lead role, first aired on Netflix on April 10, 2015. Subsequent seasons were released: Season 2 on March 18, 2016, and Season 3 on October 19, 2018. The show garnered praise and was nominated for several Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. A spin-off series, “The Punisher,” focusing on Jon Bernthal’s character Frank Castle/Punisher, was also developed. Unfortunately, Netflix discontinued “Daredevil” in November 2018, along with other Marvel shows from their platform. These shows were later added to Disney Plus in March 2022 following Disney reacquiring the rights. At the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that “Daredevil” would return under the title “Daredevil: Born Again.” Original cast members returned, including Cox. However, one of his co-stars shared some intriguing differences between the new show and its Netflix counterpart.

Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Wilson Fisk (Kingpin), is among the original cast members returning for the new series Born Again. In this show, he reprises his role alongside Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Jon Bernthal, Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), and Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page). During an interview with Nikki Novak for Rotten Tomatoes TV, the cast discussed the darker tone of the Disney Plus series. When asked about a significant fight scene in the upcoming season, D’Onofrio mentioned it would be something fans would watch repeatedly due to its coolness. However, when Cox asked him what he had told Novak, D’Onofrio jokingly denied revealing anything and claimed Novak wasn’t quoting his exact words. The interview ended with Novak playfully stating she wouldn’t directly quote D’Onofrio’s comments after the cast laughed at the exchange. D’Onofrio later explained that he was referring to a scene where Cox’s Daredevil fights in an “extremely cool” manner and hinted at it being quite exciting.

In a conversation, Novak enquired if the show would become more intense now that it’s moving to Disney Plus. D’Onofrio hinted at this possibility while playfully mentioning a scene his character participated in that he never thought would be included. He stated, “There are certain aspects of this series that we push beyond what we did on the initial show. There’s one thing my character does specifically that I can hardly believe made it into the final cut.” Novak attempted to coax him to reveal it, but he playfully withheld, labeling it as “widely anticipated.” In the end, Novak decided to focus on what the cast members were willing to discuss and told D’Onofrio she would look forward to seeing that scene.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but get excited about the intensified violence in Daredevil: Born Again. The original Netflix series was no stranger to gore, with scenes like the brutal neck-stabbing of a guard by a prisoner. We were accustomed to graphic depictions of violence and gruesome injuries – fights that cracked bones, resulted in dismemberment or even decapitation. Daredevil was already a masterpiece of extreme violence and brutality. Yet, Vincent D’Onofrio hinting at his character taking it to another level, doing something he thought wouldn’t make the cut, promises something even more intense and disturbing than what we’ve seen before. This upcoming scene is sure to be a standout, and given that D’Onofrio said fans would want to rewatch it repeatedly, it’s safe to say it won’t easily be forgotten.

Daredevil: Born Again premieres in March 2025 on Disney Plus.
