As a devoted fan who has followed Dexter’s dark and twisted journey since the very beginning, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation about the prospect of Dexter: Resurrection. While Jennifer Carpenter’s return to the role of Debra Morgan isn’t definitive yet, her words leave just enough room for hope.
The revival series titled “Dexter: Resurrection” will commence filming in January 2025. You can expect it to air on Paramount + and Showtime around the summer of next year following its release. Clyde Phillips, known for his work as a showrunner, is leading the team writing this sequel series, trying to devise an intriguing way for Dexter Morgan to reappear after seemingly meeting his end in “Dexter: New Blood“. Michael C. Hall will once again play the role of the famous serial killer with a moral compass, and the upcoming show promises a blend of familiar and fresh elements to keep viewers guessing.
In the heart of both the initial saga and its sequel, New Blood, there existed a spectral presence that led me, Dexter, through my darkest moments. This apparition could potentially resurface if I were to find myself alive again in Dexter: Resurrection. Yet, the identity of this specter remains uncertain. In the original series that spanned from 2006-2013, James Remar portrayed a spectral version of my deceased adoptive father, Harry Morgan. However, when New Blood was broadcast in 2021-2022, it was Debra Morgan, played by Jennifer Carpenter, who stepped into the role of a stronger manifestation of my subconscious thoughts.
Who Could Play Dexter’s Ghost in Dexter: Resurrection?
Harry Morgan
As a devoted fan, I must say that James Remar truly brought Harry Morgan, Dexter’s spectral father, to life in the series, Dexter. However, as the show progressed, his appearances towards the end of the original run started to lose their impact and became somewhat of a distraction from the unfolding events. That being said, I must commend Remar for his captivating portrayal of Harry in some pivotal flashback scenes during the early years of the show, which always added depth and insight. It was a wise choice not to include him in Dexter: New Blood, as Dexter had since moved beyond his father’s influence and was dealing with a host of other haunting experiences, such as the tragic death of his sister, Debra Morgan, who then became a ghostly presence for him.
In summer 2025, when Dexter: Resurrection is set to release, it will mark a gap of 12 years since we last saw Harry on screen. Given this lengthy hiatus, it might be intriguing to re-explore his character. The potential comeback of Harry in the subsequent series could tie in with the prequel, Dexter: Original Sin, as Harry Morgan is slated to be a significant character in that show. Interestingly, Christian Slater will portray a younger Harry Morgan in Dexter’s upcoming prequel, potentially setting up a fascinating scenario where he could also embody Harry’s spirit in Dexter: Resurrection, thereby establishing a strong narrative link between the two series.
Debra Morgan
Debra Morgan’s demise in the final episode of the original Dexter series left fans heartbroken following her character’s transformation throughout numerous seasons. However, in the realm of Dexter, death doesn’t necessarily mean a character won’t return, and surprisingly, Debra reappeared in Dexter: New Blood, stepping into the role of Harry, Dexter’s new spectral guide.
In the original series, Harry served as a helpful presence within Dexter’s inner mind, whereas Debra was his polar opposite – confrontational and pushing him to acknowledge his true identity. This dynamic became particularly pronounced when it was revealed that Dexter was a serial killer, and Ghost Debra took things up a notch. If the spin-off series Dexter: Resurrection were to continue, there’s a strong possibility it would further explore the tension between Dexter and his ghostly counterpart, Debra. Notably, Michael C. Hall has left the door open for Jennifer Carpenter to reprise her role in the series following her recent comments to Variety.
I’m not one to rule anything out completely. The world, in its mysterious way, is full of possibilities, so I wouldn’t categorically reject an idea. There are various figures in his broader realm who could potentially make a comeback.
Dexter Could Experience Ghosts Of People He Has Killed
A fresh approach for “Dexter: Resurrection” might involve bringing back characters that Dexter had killed in both Dexter and Dexter: New Blood, but this time as spectral visions of the past. This would allow the reintroduction of iconic villains from the Dexter series, such as The Trinity Killer (portrayed by John Lithgow) and The Ice Truck Killer (Christian Camargo), who had previously appeared as Dexter’s spectral companions in later seasons of the original show. Interestingly, Dexter’s ghostly visitors have always been his family members up until now, so including The Ice Truck Killer, being Dexter’s brother, could align with this pattern.
Dexter: Resurrection Could Opt To Have Ghosts Of Characters Whose Deaths Dexter Was Indirectly Responsible For
In the series “Dexter: Resurrection,” the spirits appearing might be individuals who were wrongfully killed due to Dexter’s actions, such as Maria LaGuerta, James Doakes, and Frank Lundy. Notably, these characters resurfaced in the closing scenes of “Dexter: New Blood” in eerie flashbacks, along with other blameless victims who met their end at Dexter’s hands, including a kill that “Dexter: Resurrection” may struggle to rationalize.
Innocent Characters Who Died Because Of Dexter:
- Maria LaGuerta: Shot and killed by Debra when forced to choose between her and Dexter.
- James Doakes: Died in an explosion set off by Dexter’s girlfriend, Lila, after Dexter captured him and kept him prisoner while he decided what to do with him.
- Frank Lundy: Shot and killed by Trinity’s daughter, but he originally came to Miami to hunt down the Bay Harbor Butcher (who was, of course, Dexter)
- Debra Morgan: Shot and killed by Oliver Saxon/Daniel Vogel (a.k.a. The Brain Surgeon) after Dexter decided against killing him
- Harry Morgan: Killed himself after not being able to deal with what Dexter had become.
- Rita Bennett: Killed by The Trinity Killer after Dexter failed to kill him straightaway.
- Coach Logan: Killed By Dexter in order to escape his jail cell.
In the upcoming series “Dexter: Resurrection”, there is a potential scenario where these flashbacks serve as precursors for spirits that will haunt Dexter throughout the show. However, when Dexter comes back to life in this sequel, it’s possible he won’t encounter any ghostly apparitions at all, leading the narrative to diverge from “Dexter” and “Dexter: New Blood”. These spectral visions have historically complicated Dexter’s storyline, so eliminating them might provide a fresh, liberating direction for the series.
