In The Last Caretaker, you play as a robot caretaker tasked with safeguarding the final remnants of humanity – seeds that could repopulate the world. Your main objective is to protect these seeds from dangerous robots and harsh weather while building a rocket to launch them into space. Since the game world is largely submerged underwater, you’ll need to gather resources by salvaging scrap and other materials to keep everything running.
How to Dismantle Scrap in The Last Caretaker
You can find ‘scrap’ – basically any loose item – all over the world. This includes things like debris, furniture, and old machines. You can break these items down into useful materials using the Dismantle Tool. You unlock this tool at Level 2, and then access it by pressing the ‘T’ key to open the Tool Menu and selecting it.
Small pieces of waste can usually be collected by hand, but some may need to be put in a recycling machine.
To break down items, equip the Dismantle Tool and aim at what you want to dismantle. Click and hold the left mouse button to begin. Keep an eye on the small on-screen message to see how much time and electricity the process uses.
Once you break down an item completely, you need to use a Recycler to get anything useful from it. You have one on your boat, but to build another, you’ll need to reach level 4 and unlock it. Simply place broken-down items into the Recycler, and it will turn them into resources you can use. You can also just toss items in!
You can also break down crafted items using a Recycler, but you need to unlock the ability on your skills list first.
Where to Find All Scrap & Materials in The Last Caretaker
In The Last Caretaker, you’ll find scrap materials all over the world, and you’ll need to explore to collect them – just like in other survival games. The types of materials you get from items make sense: plastic items give you plastic, rubber items give you rubber, and so on. If you’re not sure what an item will yield, use the Dismantle Tool to find out.

Need parts to build things? You can create them using the Fabricator or the Build Menu (press B). You’ll find a Fabricator on your ship, located right next to the Recycler.
