As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I find myself disheartened by Activision’s recent decision to shut down the fan-made Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remaster project, H2M Mod. This mod, brimming with potential and community enthusiasm, was poised to breathe new life into a beloved classic, offering an updated multiplayer experience that Activision itself failed to deliver in their own remastered version.

A former Infinity Ward developer has publicly criticized Activision for shutting down a fan-developed remaster of 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, just a day before its release. The project, which had generated significant excitement within the gaming community, aimed to revive Modern Warfare 2‘s multiplayer mode with enhanced visuals and updated features.

Originally set for release on August 16th, the H2M Mod was abruptly halted when the development team received a cease-and-desist order from Activision Publishing. In response to this legal mandate, the developers announced an immediate and permanent closure of all operations linked to the project. The mod had garnered much excitement as it was inspired by Activision’s decision to remaster only the single-player campaign of Modern Warfare 2, leaving its multiplayer mode untouched. This unexpected cancellation ignited a wave of discontent among players, who voiced their disappointment across various platforms, resulting in review bombing on Steam and requests for refunds on Modern Warfare Remastered.

In reaction to Activision’s move to scrap the multiplayer remaster of Modern Warfare 2, Robert Bowling, a former developer at Infinity Ward, voiced his disapproval. He pointed out that several members of the original Infinity Ward team were previously modders who had greatly profited from the mod tools and server files included with the initial PC versions of Call of Duty. These resources were designed to foster creativity within the community and prolong the original games’ concepts. Bowling contended that developers ought to prioritize building systems that nurture user-generated content communities, rather than restricting their growth.

Faze Clan Also Commented On Activision Shutting Down MW2 H2M

FaZe Clan, a prominent esports organization, expressed their dismay regarding the situation in a tweet. They clarified that although they weren’t part of the remaster project, they had passionate fans eager to generate content like an ILLCAMS for the H2 mod. They highlighted that the remaster serves as a crucial tool for fostering community and attracting new players. FaZe Clan appealed to Activision, suggesting they rethink their decision, arguing that the remaster could provide enjoyable, engaging experiences that are essential for the Call of Duty franchise.

Furthermore, the fans of “Call of Duty” have started a petition on Change.org named “Allow H2M-Mod to Thrive Peacefully.” In just over a day, this petition has gathered approximately 6,500 signatures from players who are pushing for the mod’s public release. Currently, the petition stands at 7,875 signatures, aiming to reach 10,000. The increasing number of signatures highlights the community’s intense wish to see this remaster project succeed.
