As a long-time gamer with a soft spot for cult classics and artful gaming experiences, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement at the prospect of Bluepoint Games taking on an Ico remake. With their proven track record of breathtaking remakes, they seem like the perfect team to bring this classic back to life.

Over the past few years, Bluepoint Games has become Sony’s preferred choice for revamping beloved classic games, with notable remakes like Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls. Within just a short period, they’ve proven their prowess in game reconstruction. This impressive track record didn’t go unnoticed by Sony, who acquired Bluepoint Games in September 2021, thereby making it an exclusive first-party studio under Sony’s wing.

Although there’s been no news since the acquisition, it appears that Bluepoint Games is shifting focus from remakes towards original projects. However, considering their past successes, Sony might benefit from having them work on remakes or remasters first. Now could be an opportune moment for assigning Bluepoint the task of refining the cult-classic game Ico, given their proven ability to create exceptional remakes. In fact, Bluepoint Games seems ideally suited to deliver a remarkable remake of this beloved game.

Bluepoint Is The Perfect Team For An Ico Remake

Bluepoint Has Clear Experience With Team Ico’s Lineup

From the get-go, it’s evident that Bluepoint Games holds a strong connection to the duology of games developed by Team Ico. Before embarking on proper remakes, Bluepoint released the collection of both Ico and Shadow of the Colossus for PlayStation 3 in 2011. Given their prior experience within the Ico series, transitioning towards a full remake seems like a logical progression for them.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but share some exciting news about my favorite developers, Bluepoint Games. They took on the challenge of creating a complete overhaul of Shadow of the Colossus in 2018. Now, this game might not have the same gameplay mechanics as Ico, but it certainly carries the same profound thematic essence that Team Ico’s initial masterpiece did. Given their extensive background with these two titles, it seems like the perfect time for Bluepoint to channel their expertise into a full remake of Ico!

Ico Deserves a Second Chance On PlayStation 5

All things considered, Ico also deserves another chance at life. Under the radar, this 2001 PlayStation 2 title has become a massive favorite of game creators across the board, even influencing legendary developers like Eiji Aonuma and Hideo Kojima. It was one of the first games to really push gaming as an art form, and its minimalistic approach can still be felt to this day in numerous modern games.

Despite being a financial underperformer for Sony back in 2001 due to its unconventional design, the game Ico has found a niche audience and could find success in today’s market which values artistic games more than ever. A remake of Ico would not be out of place in current gaming trends given its existing cult following.

One of the early games significantly advanced gaming into a form of artistic expression. Its simplistic design continues to resonate in many contemporary games today.

Shadow of the Colossus Was Massively Successful For Bluepoint Games

The remake of Bluepoint’s “Shadow of the Colossus” demonstrates that the current gaming landscape is increasingly favorable towards less conventional, artistically-driven games. Despite the success of the PlayStation 2 version, the PlayStation 4 reboot surpassed its initial sales by 73% during its first week. Over time, games that explore the medium as an art form have significantly increased in number since Team Ico created these original titles. A remake could extend the reach of the game to a wider audience that might not have experienced it originally.

Of course, it may be a long time before we get such a remake, given that Bluepoint is busy with its next original project. It’s important that they stay focused on this original game, as in a market loaded with remakes, remasters, and other such re-releases, it’s important to keep creating new titles as well. Still, if Bluepoint Games gets the chance to go back to the well with a remake, it would be great to see Ico get another chance to dance.
