After weeks of waiting, Izuku Midoriya has finally reached the Coffin in the Sky and delivered his first blow to Tomura Shigaraki/All for One, and it’s a pleasure to say that it was worth the wait. This is far from the end of an already very lengthy battle, but My Hero Academia made up for lost time splendidly thanks to some incredible animation and the debut of one of Deku’s coolest abilities yet.

In the latest installment, I found myself pondering the central motifs of heritage and safeguarding the future, as our seasoned heroes grappled with Bakugo’s crushing defeat. As Edgeshot tirelessly attempted to revive him, it was left to a disheartened Lemillion to stall Shigaraki, giving me the time I needed to finally step up and make my much-needed entrance.

Deku Kicks It into High Gear (Literally)

As a gamer diving headfirst into Season 7, it feels like the majority of this season has been focused on one massive showdown. The moments of intense action are compact but explosive, and there’s been no shortage of them. Of course, there have been some deviations, with certain episodes highlighting stellar matchups. The season kicked off with a heart-pounding win for Star and Stripe, Todoroki and Dabi ignited Kamino, and now, it seems like Episode 151 is all about Deku versus Shigaraki.

While there may be disagreement about this, it’s fair to say that Season 7 has been exceptional in terms of action, not just because of its impressive visuals, but due to the skillfully crafted conflicts involving the setting, character quirks, and strategic elements. This excellence can be traced back to the season premiere, where Horikoshi’s storytelling was particularly brilliant on a conceptual level, and Bones did an outstanding job in its adaptation.

Just as expected for this eagerly awaited rematch, Deku showcases not only the final power from One for All but demonstrates a proficiency in each ability that will leave long-term fans spellbound. After such a prolonged period of secrecy, the quirk called “Gearshift,” possessed by the second user, had to be exceptional to justify the wait, and it certainly delivers. What’s more exciting is that the episode doesn’t bog down with explanations – instead, it lets the action speak for itself.

While his compassionate nature may have been the primary factor, it’s his strategically sharp mind that has proven to be his most potent asset since he couldn’t utilize his quirk without injuring himself. This battle is magnificent, yet the true power of One for All lies not just in its versatility, but in how Deku employs it effectively.

Over the course of the seasons, I’ve noticed that Deku’s array of powers has expanded significantly – some really awesome abilities, but at times, they felt disjointed from his character. But when you see them all in action together, it becomes clear that there’s a method to this seemingly diverse set of superpowers. With his sharp intellect added into the mix, watching Deku utilize these powers feels like witnessing him at the height of his potential.

The Renewed “Meaning” of Quirks

At times, I ponder if the anime My Hero Academia might be grappling with its underlying themes. On one hand, it promotes individuality, suggesting that no character is insignificant, everyone has the potential to be a hero. However, it also seems to revolve around a singular boy who possesses an unusual number of abilities beyond super-strength, which other characters often look up to and rely on.

Although it appears that the storyline’s themes are at odds with each other, they could instead be seen as part of a larger theme that binds these seemingly disparate elements together. In this particular episode, Kudo’s words encapsulate this idea, emphasizing where the real power of One for All lies: not in the quirks themselves, but in the determination and resolve of those who possess them.

Focusing on the underlying ability itself might not be the key point. Instead, consider how and whom you apply that given ability. It’s that determination within you that holds the essence of power. That’s why it’s often referred to as a “Quirk.”

What This Quote Says About The Story’s Message

In this show, it’s often emphasized that unique abilities (quirks) are deeply connected to one’s essence, as shown by Deku communicating with previous users and All for One’s powers defying him. If Episode 150 served as a hard lesson about handing over responsibilities when the task appears unsuccessful, then Episode 151 clearly showcases the triumphant fulfillment of that duty.

Kudo’s words may serve as encouragement to Deku or a critique of All for One, but in any case, they underscore a fundamental connection between the themes of My Hero Academia and its hero, Deku. Regardless of how this battle unfolds against All for One, it is clear that Deku will emerge victorious not just because he has One for All, but because he embodies the spirit of those who came before him, choosing to honor their legacy rather than abandoning it.

If Dekz hadn’t received that level of respect, he wouldn’t have achieved even half of his strength, let alone mastered it. What sets him apart from his adversary is that the latter seizes power indiscriminately, disregarding the spirit connected to it – a factor which could have led Dekz to failure but instead, he earned the right to wield it.

To put it simply, overall, this was an exceptional episode, but it may have fallen short on delivering a climactic finish due to the season’s prolonged build-up and tension. The rapid development of Shigaraki and Deku’s character growth has been impressive, yet there’s a concern about potential burnout. This is a common trope in shonen series, where villains can seem invincible towards the end, a theme that deserves more analysis.

Currently, the focus of “My Hero Academia” will shift to other battles, such as the one between Shoji and Spinner, ensuring that the storyline remains fresh and exciting rather than becoming repetitive or stale. After a brief hiatus, it seems we’re approaching the closing weeks of this season, which promise to be quite engaging.
