As a seasoned gamer and Marvel enthusiast with a soft spot for edge-of-your-seat action sequences, I can hardly contain my excitement for Florence Pugh’s upcoming role in Thunderbolts*. Her portrayal of Yelena Belova in Black Widow was nothing short of electrifying, and the prospect of seeing her leap off the world’s second tallest building – no big deal, right? – has me on the edge of my seat.

Last weekend, I hung out with my Thunderbolts crew at San Diego Comic-Con. During our time there, I couldn’t help but get excited as I spilled the beans about the mind-blowing stunt I pulled off for our upcoming Marvel film!

In the thrilling world of Marvel Cinema, I’ve been honored to take on the role of Yelena Belova, the estranged sister of Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. You might remember me from Scarlett Johansson’s exhilarating 2021 film, “Black Widow”. In the future, you’ll also see me alongside other talented cast members in “Thunderbolts”*. Alongside me, David Harbour (Alexei Shoskatov/Red Guardian) and Olga Kurylenko (Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster) are set to join this upcoming superhero adventure. During the San Diego Comic-Con, I revealed that I did something truly nerve-wracking, a feat that might be among the scariest for any actor.

During a brief chat with Variety at the gathering, Pugh revealed that for the movie Thunderbolts, she performed an impressive feat – leaping from one of the world’s tallest buildings. In response to the question about the stunt, she simply replied, “Jumping off the second highest building in the world. See you later!” At the event, Pugh acknowledged the stunt team for their brave actions, expressing her admiration by saying, “I believe everyone enjoys feeling daring when it comes to stunts. This film is extraordinary and peculiar, and it’s because of this cast.” During the panel, Wyatt Russell shared his enjoyment of working with a friendly cast, and Harbour concurred before naming his favorite co-star. For Harbour, his top pick was Pugh as she is “a joy to collaborate with” and offers both warmth and humor, but also depth and emotion.

As a huge fan, I can tell you that, according to Pugh, Thunderbolts stands out from the other movies she’s been involved in, even compared to other superhero films. The way its characters were crafted and scenes shot is unlike anything else, and she attributes this to its director, Jake Schreier. In an interview with CBR, she praised the film, saying, “I think it has a very unique tone and a very specific story that we’re all so grateful for Jake to tell.” What makes it even more extraordinary is the way he chose to film it – instead of using green screens and “super props,” they shot on real sets with actual locations and real stunts. This approach, she noted, is quite unusual for a superhero movie.

She added:

It seemed as if we were creating an astonishingly authentic film about genuine individuals, though our world doesn’t usually encompass such a universe. Consequently, the influence and awe we experienced on set was profound, and this description barely scratches the surface.

Pugh is one of the most prominent actresses of her era, gracing our screens last year in not just one, but two blockbuster films: Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two.” In “Oppenheimer,” she collaborated with Cillian Murphy, Josh Hartnett, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Jack Quaid, and Robert Downey Jr., who is well-known for his work in Marvel. For “Dune: Part Two,” she shared the screen with Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Christopher Walken, Josh Brolin, and Dave Bautista, among others. With a talent like hers, there’s never a lack of roles to play.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my awe at Florence Pugh’s remarkable debut in the Marvel universe. Her portrayal of the skilled spy and assassin was spot-on, and her execution of action sequences was flawless. The emotions she conveyed through her line delivery were fitting in every scene. A prime example is during the family reunion dinner, where her raw pain echoed through her voice and was etched on her face as she grappled with the revelation that her own mother had been instrumental in creating the methods used against her – the very program that Dreykov employed to control the Black Widows, turning them into unquestioning subordinates. With Florence’s exceptional acting skills and versatility, I can hardly wait for her scenes in Thunderbolts, particularly the moment she leaps off the second tallest building in the world. It promises to be a spectacle that will leave fans exhilarated!

Thunderbolts* will hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
