FromSoft has finally plundered its work from 2012 to put the best Dark Souls boss in Elden Ring Nightreign

Fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the Elden Ring DLC, rumored to add new bosses and playable characters. FromSoftware finally revealed their plans with a surprise trailer during Tuesday’s Sony State of Play event. The expansion, called The Forsaken Hollows, will be released on December 4th, and it will feature the return of one of the most popular bosses from previous FromSoftware games.

Okay, so I was watching the trailer, and at 1:15, they showed Artorias from Dark Souls 1! He’s gonna be one of the bosses we have to beat before facing the final Nightlord. It’s not the first Dark Souls boss they’ve added, though – the Gaping Dragon is already in the game, and that one’s pretty manageable. But honestly? I have a feeling Artorias is going to be a real challenge.

I think what I’m remembering is fighting Artorias in the ‘Artorias of the Abyss’ DLC for Dark Souls, which came out in 2012. FromSoftware games are known for their fast-paced combat now, requiring quick reactions against bosses like Malenia. But Dark Souls was different. Most of its bosses were slow and powerful, and even the quicker enemies had simpler, shorter attack patterns than what we see in FromSoftware games today. Artorias was the first boss that really started to change that style of combat.

Throughout Dark Souls, people tell tales of a famous knight, but you don’t actually fight him until the game’s downloadable content. There, you discover he’s been twisted by a dark power, sending him into a chaotic rage. He fights with incredible speed and a massive longsword, and his attacks have a long reach, making it difficult to heal during the battle. This fight feels like a practice run for the challenging one-on-one boss battles that FromSoftware perfected in later Dark Souls games and Elden Ring, becoming some of the most iconic moments in those games.

The battle was challenging, as expected in a Dark Souls game, and it was a fantastic way to start the expansion after everything we learned in the main game. It feels like the perfect introduction to Nightreign, which FromSoftware seems to be designing as a celebration of its most popular RPG elements and iconic bosses.

Honestly, I’m really excited about how this fight could work with a team of three players! I’m a little worried Artorias might need some tweaking in the game’s AI to feel truly challenging in Nightreign, but overall, this is amazing. Since the game came out, I’ve been hoping for more mid-run bosses from the older games to keep things fresh, and this is the perfect first step. I couldn’t have asked for a better addition!
