As a die-hard Marvel fan who has been following the MCU since its inception, I can confidently say that the upcoming spinoff series, Agatha All Along, has me intrigued and excited! The fact that it’s drawing inspiration from classic horror/thriller films like The Wizard of Oz, The Exorcist, Rosemary’s Baby, The Goonies, and even Nancy Meyers is simply mind-blowing.

For years, “Agatha All Along” has been under development, and now, with the much-anticipated spinoff almost ready for launch, the cast of the show have disclosed one clever trick that their new Marvel Cinematic Universe character adopted from its original series and significantly employed.

Although it’s yet to premiere over a month from now, “Agatha All Along” is a spin-off of the first major Disney+ series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Wandavision,” which debuted in 2021. The title character was initially portrayed as the antagonist in the Scarlet Witch’s tribute to classic TV sitcom motifs and quickly garnered such a strong fan following that a spin-off series was soon approved. However, despite an early announcement and the main character already being cast, “Agatha All Along” has since been labeled as one of Marvel’s least essential projects as the enthusiasm generated at its announcement began to wane with the increasing delay between the initial hype and its actual release date.

Although there has been a decline in the show’s popularity due to its time away from screens, recent developments indicate that Agatha All Along might just be an outstanding horror adventure tailored for the MCU. In a chat with TotalFilm and the cast, Agatha All Along‘s lead actor Joe Locke shared that the series drew inspiration from numerous classic Hollywood projects, such as The Wizard of Oz. Moreover, Locke mentioned that each episode is modeled after a distinct horror/thriller film. When discussing specific influences, Locke pointed out that the show contains references to The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby, among others. Interestingly enough, he also highlighted The Goonies as his personal favorite influence on the series, with the cast and crew often comparing certain elements to this beloved film.

In their own words, Aubrey Plaza and Kathryn Hahn shared additional insights about the show. Aubrey mentioned that “The Craft” was a strong influence on the tone of the series, as it seamlessly blends intense horror with moments of humor and campiness. Kathryn Hahn, who brought Agatha to life in “Wandavision,” pointed out that the show combines elements reminiscent of Nancy Meyers’ films, the camaraderie seen in “Hocus Pocus,” and the fear factor akin to movies like “Practical Magic,” “Poltergeist,” or “E.T.”

All these sources of inspiration sound splendid and could really put the series over the top if they come through when audiences actually get to watch the series for themselves. If things don’t work out in the execution, then Agatha All Along could end up having the same problem She-Hulk did by strongly projecting a genre piece that just didn’t fit the mold built by its advertising and promotion. While the crime of having too much comedy and super-powered antics to properly count as a legal comedy can be easily overlooked (especially since She-Hulk came out while it was still directly relevant), marketing a spin-off series three years in the making as a serious horror inspired project is a much higher height to fall from and could be disastrous. This is especially true considering the fact that MCU humor has never been known for its subtlety or respect for the general tone of the story.

As a devoted fan, I’ve been pondering about Agatha All Along for quite some time now, given its significant role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the extended gestation period since the conclusion of WandaVision. It’s evident that this production needs to be extraordinary to thrive in today’s MCU landscape.

Agatha All Along is currently set to premiere for streaming on Disney+ on September 18, 2024.
