Overwatch 2 Reveals Juno's Backstory

Highlights

  • A new Overwatch 2 comic introduces Juno with an emotional backstory of her Martian origins and mission to save her planet, landing her on Earth.
  • Fans have praised Juno’s comic and backstory, while yearning for more cinematic animations for the game.
  • Blizzard’s focus on narrated comics like “The Red Promise” may signal a shift in storytelling for new Overwatch 2 heroes, with fewer animations.

As a seasoned Overwatch player with countless hours logged into the game since its initial release, I must say that Juno’s introduction through “The Red Promise” comic has stirred a mix of emotions within me. Her Martian origins and selfless mission to save her planet have added another layer of depth to the rich tapestry of characters in Overwatch 2.

In a recent unveiling, “Overwatch 2” introduced “The Red Promise,” a captivating comic narration that delves into the origins of its newest character, Juno. This engrossing narrative recounts her journey from Mars to becoming part of the cast in “Overwatch 2.”

At BlizzCon 2023, it was unveiled that Overwatch 2 will introduce its first two new heroes in the year 2024: Venture and Juno. Initially known as “Space Ranger,” Juno is characterized as a swift-moving support character. Venture entered the game during Season 10, and now, Juno makes her debut in Season 12, set to launch in Overwatch 2 on August 20.

Prior to its official launch, details about Juno’s backstory have been unveiled in “The Red Promise”, a comic narrated by Xanthe Huynh, the voice actor for Juno. This story explains how Juno, the first and only Martian, came to be. Born and raised on a Mars base designed to transform the red planet into a livable environment, Juno’s life took a dramatic turn when those funding the project mysteriously ceased communication. Realizing their time was limited, the scientists constructed a spaceship for Juno to escape in. However, she made a vow to return to Earth and seek help to save her family and Mars from destruction.

Overwatch 2 Juno Backstory Comic – “The Red Promise”

Initially, during the preview of Overwatch 2’s Dorodo map, fans spotted a photograph of Mei and her former astrophysicist companion Jiayi, along with a Morse code transmission from the pod that started with “J.” This finding led numerous Overwatch 2 players to incorrectly guess that Space Ranger was Jiayi, but in reality, the newly introduced Martian character is actually Jiayi’s daughter, Juno.

Fans of Overwatch 2 were deeply moved by the comic’s heartfelt and captivating storyline featuring Juno, but expressed a desire to see it brought to life through animation. Known for their exceptional quality and cinematography, Blizzard motion stories and cinematics have often been used to introduce new characters in both Overwatch and its sequel.

Regrettably, more recent characters in Overwatch 2 have seen a decline in story-related animations. Characters like Lifeweaver, Mauga, and Illari were given full-length animated motion stories to explain their origins. Mauga and Venture received shorter animations, with Venture’s being less than a minute long, and a narrated comic similar to Juno was created for Venture. However, there have been no new character cinematics in Overwatch 2 since its release, leading some to speculate that due to the layoffs at Blizzard earlier this year, narrated comics like “The Red Promise” may become the primary method of storytelling.
