Horizon MMORPG Officially Revealed, And Fans Have Thoughts

The highly anticipated Horizon MMORPG has finally been revealed, but the announcement hasn’t pleased everyone. People have been speculating about a multiplayer Horizon game for over five years, and Guerrilla Games even suggested it was in development back in 2020 when they advertised for someone with experience making multiplayer open-world games.

This new MMORPG might not be the online game Guerrilla was previously rumored to be developing. It appears to be a separate project, created by a different team and aimed at a different type of player.

Horizon Steel Frontiers Is an MMORPG Not Releasing on PlayStation 5

At the G-Star 2025 game conference in Korea on November 13th, NCSoft announced Horizon Steel Frontiers, a new online multiplayer game set in the world of Horizon. Developed with Guerrilla Games, the game lets players become machine hunters in the dangerous Deadlands. Players will team up and compete with others online to battle massive machines in challenging raid encounters, create and upgrade their equipment, and ride various machines to uncover the mysteries of the Deadlands. While NCSoft, Guerrilla, and Sony haven’t said where Horizon Steel Frontiers fits in the overall Horizon story, or if characters like Aloy, Erend, and Sylens will be featured, fans are excited about this new adventure.

The announcement of Horizon Steel Frontiers was met with immediate criticism from fans, despite looking impressive in its trailer. The game is planned for iOS, Android, and PC, with players on all platforms sharing one world. However, there’s been no mention of a PlayStation 5 or 4 release on the official PlayStation Blog, in developer interviews, or on the game’s website. This has understandably disappointed many fans, especially considering the previous Horizon games, Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, were PlayStation exclusives, and the series is largely known as a PlayStation-owned franchise.

Sony recently announced another mobile multiplayer game based on a popular single-player series – Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble will be available on iOS and Android starting November 12th. While NCSoft has a history of successful large-scale online games like Lineage and Guild Wars, some Horizon fans are understandably cautious about the new massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) because it’s a departure from the series’ traditional PlayStation and single-player format.
