Minecraft: How to Make A Nether Portal

As a seasoned Minecraft player with countless hours spent traversing the Overworld, I can confidently say that the addition of the Nether dimension has added a whole new layer of excitement to my gaming experience. The process of creating a Nether Portal is not only fascinating but also quite intriguing for those who are new to this pixelated world.

2011’s widely acclaimed sandbox game Minecraft features three unique realms, each having its individual map and landscapes known as biomes. Navigation between these distinct realms is facilitated through dimensional gateways called portals.

One such portal is called Nether which connects the Overworld to the hell-like dimension of the Nether. Below, we will explain the steps to make the Nether Portal in Minecraft.

How to Make a Nether Portal in Minecraft

There are two methods to construct a Nether Portal, based on whether you possess a Diamond Pickaxe or not.

First Method:

As a seasoned Minecraft player with countless hours spent mining and crafting, I can confidently say that building a Nether Portal is one of the most exciting challenges in the game. To mine Obsidian, which is essential for constructing the portal frame, you’ll need a Diamond Pickaxe. Now, I learned the hard way that diamonds are rare minerals and might be tough to find. So, my advice would be to explore thoroughly, be patient, and keep an eye out for those precious diamonds. Once you have three of them, you can craft your Diamond Pickaxe by adding two sticks to the mix. Happy mining!

Obsidian is created when water encounters cooling lava, often found near volcanic areas or by pouring water over hot lava. To mine it, you’ll need a Diamond Pickaxe or something even stronger. A Nether Portal, constructed with a maximum of 14 Obsidian blocks (but using as few as 10 will work), is essential for interdimensional travel in the game.

1. Initially, set down two Obsidian stones as a foundation. Afterward, place four Cobblestone blocks with two on each side to serve as a base. Then, stack three more Obsidian stones on top of each Cobblestone block, and put a marker stone at the peak of each stack. Lastly, add the final pair of Obsidian stones between the uppermost ones to finish the frame. Remove the Cobblestone corner blocks, and your Obsidian frame is now ready for use.

1. To get the Nether Portal functioning, ignite it using a Flint and Steel. When active, the core turns purple. Remember to carry your Flint and Steel along for reactivating the Portal upon your return. (Or)

Method 2:

If you don’t have the Diamond Pickaxe, you can still make a Portal frame using buckets. First, dig a 2-block hole in the ground and fill it with lava. Now pour water over it and it will turn into Obsidian. Next, build a 4×5 wall just behind the hole.

1. Instead of casting molten rock onto a wall and subsequently dousing it with water to create Obsidian, consider this: Let’s cool down lava by splashing water on it, transforming it into Obsidian. It would be wise to construct the Portal near where you can easily access both lava and water for efficiency. We need to craft at least 10 blocks of Obsidian as per our previous instructions. Afterward, use Flint and Steel to ignite the Portal and traverse to the Nether.
