Minecraft's Arthropod Mob Club Could Still Expand Its Membership a Lot

Highlights

  • Minecraft’s spider is a standout among mobs, offering unique abilities and valuable loot drops for players to encounter.
  • The arthropod family in Minecraft is lacking variety and could benefit from the addition of new insectoid mobs for players to face.
  • Bane of Arthropods enchantment in Minecraft could become more relevant with the introduction of stronger arthropod enemies to challenge players.

As a seasoned Minecraft adventurer with countless hours spent navigating the blocky terrains and fending off various pixelated beasts, I can confidently say that the game’s arthropod family could use some more love. The spider, while an iconic addition to the bestiary, is just one of a handful in this group.

In the realm of video games, Minecraft boasts one of the most memorable collections of villainous characters. This game offers a diverse array of aggressive creatures for players to confront. Nevertheless, there’s an area in the extensive catalog of Minecraft’s creature kingdom that could benefit from more variety:

Among Minecraft’s diverse cast of creatures, the spider has proven to be one of the most enduring. It was introduced as the fifth mob in the game, even before its official launch in 2009. Unlike other threatening entities such as zombies, skeletons, and creepers, spiders occupy a more specialized role. They have less health to balance their unique abilities. For instance, they can climb walls, jump at players, and carry skeleton riders. In Java’s harder settings, they can also inflict various potion effects. Additionally, they drop valuable items upon defeat, with spider eyes being particularly useful for brewing weakness potions (required for curing zombie villagers) and poison potions.

Minecraft Needs More Creepy Crawlies

Spiders belong to the class of animals known as arthropods, which also includes creatures such as cave spiders, bees, silverfish, and endermites in Minecraft. While the game’s arachnids may seem fascinating on their own, it’s important to note that cave spiders offer a deadly spin on the typical spider, while bees are an exceptional mob offering useful resources. However, this collection of creatures falls short compared to what it could be. Just like the category of undead is bustling with enemies, the arthropod family could benefit from more diverse additions.

Insects Need More Representation In Minecraft

Following the firefly debacle of last year, Minecraft enthusiasts are still eagerly demanding fresh mobs to replace the gap they left. Tiny-sized critters such as flies or ants would add a touch of elegance, enlivening forests and jungles even further. These creatures don’t necessarily need to be aggressive; simply introducing more insectoid mobs would make arthropods seem more integrated into the game world. It’s also crucial for these newcomers to have a purpose within the game mechanics. The bee offers an excellent model for how arthropod creatures might contribute to intriguing systems.

From another perspective, this category suits mob types that are aggressive or neutral, such as colossal insects like the ants from “Them!” or Shelob in “Lord of the Rings.” These creatures have been a common theme in media. Although if their size isn’t large enough for Mojang to consider, considering they tend to shy away from creating real-world creatures as monsters, warped arthropods similar to endermites could be an intriguing alternative. To support this idea, Minecraft might benefit from introducing a new boss of arthropod origin; since the undead have the Wither and aquatic mobs have Elder Guardians, it seems logical for arthropods to receive the same spotlight.

Bane Of Arthropods Needs More Of A Reason To Exist

As a dedicated Minecraft gamer, I’ve always found the Bane of Arthropods enchantment to be underwhelming. Compared to regular zombies, these tiny creatures don’t pack much of a punch in terms of health, making this enchantment seem less effective. Plus, Sharpness is already a more appealing choice for swords. And let’s not forget, arthropod mobs are quite small, which makes the issue even more pronounced.

Therefore, increasing the power of arthropod enemies in Minecraft by improving their health and damage could elevate Bane of Arthropods from being insignificant to a valuable tool similar to Smite as a secondary weapon. While Sharpness remains generally useful, there’s still room for a specialized niche. In contrast to armor, it makes sense to have different weapons for various scenarios, and creating exciting arthropod battles across the map would add an engaging aspect to survival.
