As a seasoned gamer with decades of Nintendo nostalgia etched into my gaming DNA, the announcement that the long-awaited Nintendo Museum will finally open its doors this October is nothing short of a dream come true! The anticipation has been palpable since the initial announcement back in 2021, and now, after overcoming some development hurdles, we’re one step closer to stepping into gaming history.

After experiencing certain difficulties, the long-awaited Nintendo Museum is scheduled to welcome visitors on October 2. Nintendo unveiled this opening date along with the initial glimpse of this distinctive establishment.

Back in June 2021, Nintendo unveiled plans to establish their own museum. They selected one of their former playing card factories, which is situated in Uji, Kyoto, as the site for this venture. Interestingly, the project had already been underway when they announced it, but construction didn’t truly begin until December 2021.

Shigeru Miyamoto Gives Video Tour of New Nintendo Museum

Approximately three years from now, on October 2, 2024, the colossal gaming company Nintendo revealed that their museum will officially open to the public. This announcement was made during the Nintendo Direct broadcast on August 19, a day that also featured Shigeru Miyamoto, a renowned game designer, giving fans an exclusive video tour of the establishment for the very first time. During this tour, Miyamoto unveiled the museum’s main entrance, a plaza themed around Super Mario, numerous displays showcasing hardware and software, as well as a charming café, among other features.

Nintendo Museum Will Only Be Accessible Via Public Transport

Most of the historical exhibits, centered around Nintendo consoles and games throughout generations, are situated on the second level of the building. Interactive experiences featuring some classic games can also be found on the ground floor. To play these interactive experiences, visitors must obtain digital coins through passes. Unfortunately, there’s no parking available on site, so you’ll need to use public transportation like the Kintetsu Railway Kyoto line or JR Haruka Limited Express to reach the museum.

Prices for tickets vary: children pay around $7.50, adults pay approximately $22.50, and preschoolers get in free. The Nintendo Museum’s FAQ clarifies that while taking photos is generally allowed, they must not be used for commercial purposes or cause disturbance to other visitors. This rule applies to video recording, live-streaming, and selfie sticks. Pets are not allowed, except for service dogs. The museum is wheelchair-accessible, offering a few loaner wheelchairs at the information desk. However, Nintendo recommends that visitors bring their own wheelchairs whenever possible.

After encountering some obstacles during development, Nintendo postponed the opening of their museum, which was initially set for March 2024. The video tour of the facility was released later on. Initially, they had intended to open the gallery to the public in April, but due to these challenges, they ultimately decided to open it in October instead.
