God of War Developer’s New IP Was Cancelled After Investing $25 Million

Shuhei Yoshida shared that PlayStation cancelled two games, each costing $25 million to develop. One of these was a brand new game idea from the studio behind God of War.

Recently, several game projects have been cancelled, and we’ve seen glimpses of some, like early looks at a multiplayer God of War, Rare’s Everwild, and a Civil War game that never came to be. Now, Shuhei Yoshida has discussed PlayStation games that were stopped even after a lot of money had been spent on them.

Two PlayStation Projects Costing $25 Million Each Were Cancelled

Shuhei Yoshida recently discussed cancelled PlayStation games on the My Perfect Console podcast (as reported by VGC). He revealed that a project from God of War developer Santa Monica Studios wasn’t another God of War title, but a completely new game. Yoshida described it as having “a really amazing concept and very interesting gameplay ideas.”

Yoshida explained that the game had been in development for a long time, but after an investment of $25 million, the team told him they had to cancel it. He couldn’t remember the specific reason, but he believes the core problem was that they couldn’t quite nail the gameplay, despite having a strong initial idea.

Shuhei Yoshida explained that canceling games early in development is common. Developers often test new ideas with prototypes. If a prototype doesn’t work, they either revise it or stop the project, and doing so early on helps keep costs down.

Cancelling a project that’s going well and already has significant investment – like the $25 million put into the Santa Monica project – is a difficult choice. However, in this situation, the developers actually came to the decision themselves and recommended stopping the project.

There Have Been “Much Bigger Cancellations”

So, Yoshida mentioned another big game that sadly got the axe. This happened when I was put in charge of Worldwide Studios – basically, I was looking over everything everyone was working on. We had some amazing projects coming out of our European studios, like stuff from London Studios, the EyeToy team, and eventually the PSVR and Media Molecule folks. And, of course, Guerrilla Games was in the mix too, you know?

There was one other large-scale project that, like Santa Monica’s cancelled game, never really found its central idea. He explained that those were the two biggest cancellations, but noted that cancelling a $25 million project isn’t unusual anymore, and even larger projects are sometimes scrapped.

Yoshida explained that canceling a game is a tough decision, even if there’s still hope for improvement. He noted that continuing a struggling project can lead to bigger financial losses and developer burnout. That’s why he emphasizes clear communication when a cancellation happens – to avoid getting stuck and instead focus on starting something completely new and revitalizing, a ‘fresh restart’.
