Xbox Game Pass Core Adds 3 More Games on August 21

Highlights

  • Three new games are coming to Xbox Game Pass Core on August 21.
  • Subscribers to the service’s lower tier will gain access to Cities: Skylines, SnowRunner, and Control: Ultimate Edition.
  • Core subscribers can likely anticipate more game drops around the holidays.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that this latest addition to Xbox Game Pass Core is a breath of fresh air. After what felt like an eternity of waiting for new games, Microsoft has finally dropped a trio of titles that will surely keep us entertained for hours on end.

Microsoft recently announced another group of games destined for inclusion in the basic tier of their Xbox Game Pass service. The transition from Xbox Live Gold to the core version of Xbox Game Pass occurred last year, allowing users who hadn’t previously subscribed to Game Pass to access a small collection of over 20 games at no extra charge. Since then, Microsoft has been regularly adding new titles to this collection, which already houses popular games such as Doom Eternal, Fallout 4, and Dishonored 2.

2024 has been a strong year for Xbox Game Pass, with titles such as the remake of Resident Evil 2, Persona 3 Reload, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor adding to the collection earlier in the year. The latest sensation, Mafia: Definitive Edition was added last week. Xbox’s original production, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, also arrived on the platform in May. There are several significant games scheduled to join Game Pass this Fall, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. However, subscribers of the Xbox Game Pass Core tier have not had as favorable a year, as new games are added less frequently to this entry-level plan.

Game Pass is adding more excitement with its latest group of games arriving at its Core tier. A new Xbox Wire blog post lays out all the fresh content coming to Game Pass by the end of August, as Xbox unveils three new titles that will join the Core tier on August 21st. These include the city-building game Cities: Skylines, the rugged trucking simulator SnowRunner, and Remedy Entertainment’s popular 2019 action game, the Control: Ultimate Edition. Luckily, no games are scheduled to depart from the Game Pass Core library this month.

New Games Coming To Xbox Game Pass Core On August 21

  • Control: Ultimate Edition
  • SnowRunner
  • Cities: Skylines

The addition of “Control” to Game Pass’s subscription service is a significant victory for subscribers. This action-adventure game was highly praised upon its release and even earned a nomination for Game of the Year at the 2019 Game Awards, although it lost out to “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” by FromSoftware. “Control” continues to be relevant in the gaming world due to its narrative connections to Remedy’s “Alan Wake” series, with a sequel to the latter released last year receiving positive reviews. Players who haven’t delved into the Federal Bureau of Control can now catch up, as Remedy is currently developing the highly anticipated sequel to “Control”. Whether this means that either of the “Alan Wake” games might appear in the Game Pass library at some point in the future remains to be seen.

It’s unusual for a big, well-known game like Control to join Xbox Game Pass Core, considering that recent additions have mainly been smaller indie titles. Game Pass Core subscribers might expect more games to be added around the holiday season, as there’s usually a gap of about three to four months between new Core releases.
