  • Despite delays and disappointing updates, Shang-Chi 2 is likely to be a sure hit, given the success of the first film.

As a dedicated Shang-Chi fan with years of Marvel movies under my belt, I can’t help but feel like a kid on Christmas Eve as we wait for the sequel. The first movie was a breath of fresh air in the MCU, and Liu’s performance was nothing short of phenomenal. Three years is a long wait, but knowing that it’s happening gives me hope that good things come to those who wait.

As a devoted Shang-Chi fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the sequel. The wait has felt endless at times, and I must admit there were moments when I started to worry that we might be overlooked. But let me assure you all, the lead star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is here to calm our nerves. Rest easy, fellow enthusiasts, because Shang-Chi 2 is indeed in the works!

The initial “Shang-Chi” film hit theaters in 2021, as part of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Four. It garnered success at box offices globally, earning over $432 million. Marvel enthusiasts were not only captivated by Liu’s acting skills, but also appreciated the engaging storyline. For quite some time, they had been eagerly awaiting more of Shang-Chi’s adventures. However, the absence of updates regarding the sequel’s progress has left a number of fans feeling disheartened. Nevertheless, the actor from “Barbie” has confirmed that “Shang-Chi 2” is indeed being developed.

Liu recently spoke with The Press Trust of India after his film “Jackpot” premiered on Prime Video. During the interview, he was asked about a potential sequel to his popular superhero movie, and he gave an encouraging update: “There’s quite a bit I can’t disclose, but rest assured it’s in the works.” He hinted that they are already developing the project, and teased that fans will be thrilled with the results. Unfortunately, Liu couldn’t reveal much more about it, but he expressed his excitement to work on it and shared that it promises to be fantastic.

Liu has maintained a positive outlook regarding the Shang-Chi movie sequel and frequently shares encouraging news when questioned about it. For example, in April, when a fan voiced concerns that Marvel might have neglected the Shang-Chi fandom due to the perceived lack of effort to produce the sequel and the absence of Shang-Chi characters in other Marvel productions, Liu responded optimistically on the fan’s post on Thread with a promise. “I proooomiss it’s happening,” Liu commented. However, his recent statements stand in stark contrast to those made by Awkwafina. Awkwafina portrays Katy, Shang-Chi’s friend and hotel valet in the film, and the two actors also star together in the new action comedy film Jackpot. When asked about the Shang-Chi sequel at the press event for their latest movie, Awkwafina provided a less than promising update. According to Awkwafina, she hasn’t received any news about Shang-Chi 2 yet, suggesting that it might not be in development or perhaps she is unaware of its progress.

It’s clear that a three-year gap between films is quite substantial, especially when the initial sequel hasn’t seen much development. The underwhelming update from Awkwafina hints at the film’s lower priority within the MCU, with no mention of it during the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. However, there’s been confirmation that Shang-Chi 2 is indeed in production, and its lead actor has consistently reassured fans about its progress. Given its impressive box office performance compared to films like The Eternals (2021), The Marvels (2023) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), it’s unlikely that Marvel would abandon the project. Rumors suggest that Marvel Studios is concentrating on projects with high potential success, making a sequel to Shang-Chi seem imminent. As of now, there’s no set release date for Shang-Chi 2, but fans can maintain their optimism, unless Marvel decides to cancel it officially.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings streams on Disney Plus.
