Players have been enjoying the ‘Dying Light: The Beast’ expansion since it launched in mid-September, and Techland continues to improve it with updates. For those who aren’t familiar, ‘The Beast’ sets the stage for the future of ‘Dying Light,’ the popular open-world zombie game that first came out in 2015.
As a big fan of the Dying Light series, I know we’ve only gotten two main games so far. The first one came out in 2015, and then Dying Light 2: Stay Human in 2022. But did you know Techland actually had a bunch of other ideas floating around? One of those concepts would have been totally different from what we’re used to – a real change of pace for the series!
Dying Light: Hellrunners Laid to Rest
From 2016 to 2017, the developers at Techland were working on new content for Dying Light, resulting in the release of Dying Light: Hellrunners.
Hellrunners was envisioned as a ‘runner’ game – a style of game known for using randomly generated levels or an infinite loop, letting players run continuously. The gameplay would involve navigating an endless path, dodging obstacles, and collecting points, coins, or other rewards along the way.
Techland clarified that while they were exploring an endlessly generated world, they were also considering a more traditional, level-based game structure.
Someone described Dying Light: Hellrunners to me as a game similar to Canabalt – an endless runner where you move sideways – but with better visuals. They also said it includes zombies and parkour elements, which should give you a good idea of what to expect.

I spoke with Tymon Smektala, the Franchise Director at Techland, to find out more about the canceled project, Hellrunners, and the reasons it was never released.
We tried making a runner game, but after building some early versions, we decided it wasn’t worth pursuing. It was hard to come up with fresh ideas that would make our game different from others in the genre.
After that, the Hellrunners project was cancelled and never worked on again. The team then began developing Dying Light 2: Stay Human.
As a fan of the original Dying Light, I wondered if the ‘Hellrunners’ had any connection to the ‘Nightrunners’ – a group found in Dying Light 2: Stay Human.
Hellrunners and Nightrunners weren’t connected. Nightrunners were developed later in the creation of Dying Light 2: Stay Human, after the idea for Hellrunners had already been abandoned.
Dying Light: Hellrunners would likely make a great mobile game. While ‘runner’ games are still played, most are simple and don’t offer much complex gameplay – they’re just meant to pass the time.
I could easily visualize the gameplay of Dying Light: Hellrunners. I imagine players vaulting over obstacles, swinging across gaps with a grapple hook, and fighting off zombies while collecting essential items like UV bars, coins, and Antizin.
