DREDGE: The Iron Rig review

DREDGE: The Iron Rig review

As a gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that DREDGE: The Iron Rig has managed to reel me back in time and time again. This Lovecraftian fishing adventure, first released in 2023, has been a standout game for me, and the addition of DLC only sweetens the deal.

Among numerous video games I love, many are played only once before being forgotten. With the growing problem of an abundance of games and limited playtime, it’s challenging to revisit even favorite titles while staying current with new releases. However, DREDGE has been an exception; I keep finding myself back in its world. Initially, my attraction was due to two DLC expansions added since release to the Lovecraftian fishing adventure. Yet, I always look forward to returning to the waters and catching more deep-sea terrors. Indeed, DREDGE: The Iron Rig serves as a compelling incentive to take up the rod once more, offering fresh content to one of 2023’s standout games.

Similar to The Pale Reach DLC, The Iron Rig introduces a fresh location to your voyage. You can sail there once you’ve amassed sufficient early-game skills to make the journey. Upon arrival, you’ll encounter an enormous metallic structure. Named after it, The Iron Rig isn’t another area to maneuver through, but rather serves as a base for a questionable corporation aiming to exploit the planet’s resources for financial gain. Predictably, this leads to catastrophe, with oozes of strange black goo appearing in familiar fishing spots and some novel fish species surfacing.

DREDGE: The Iron Rig review

As I navigate the ominous waters of the DREDGE map, I’m entrusted with the mission to explore the newly emergent cursed creatures from the depths – strange crustaceans and eerie fish that have surfaced due to pollution. This involves seeking out pockets of murky sludge tainting the seas and equipping myself with custom rods to ensnare them. The allure is undeniable, heightened by the engaging mini-games that add a thrill to landing even the humblest mackerel. Additionally, I’ll need to manage the horrors I catch, organizing them within my ship’s hull to optimize space and maximize profits for all the new upgrades on offer.

You won’t just be upgrading rods and gear on your own ship either, you’ll be upgrading the Iron Rig itself too. With a whole host of different departments to build and expand you’ll unlock facilities that help you manufacture new materials, facilities that help with your own abilities, and much much more. Whereas The Pale Reach was largely superfluous if you’d already completed DREDGE as you’d already bought everything you needed, there’s loads to spend your hard-earned money and dredged-up materials in the latest DLC offering.

DREDGE: The Iron Rig review

As a seasoned gamer diving back into DREDGE: The Iron Rig, the fresh content is definitely enticing, but unfortunately, it echoes the same primary concern that plagued the previous DLC. For me, DREDGE shines brightest when I’m navigating treacherous waters in my creaky old boat, battling new terrors while simultaneously upgrading it for ventures into deeper, more perilous seas. However, with a fully completed save file, I found myself warping across the world effortlessly using mystical upgrades, sprinting to new fishing spots at breakneck speed and largely dodging danger. If you decide to start fresh in the newly released complete edition of the game, you might find the experience more satisfying. Regardless, the haunting narrative kept me gripped for a delightful dose of nostalgia, even if it didn’t provide the nail-biting tension I had hoped for.

In the sequel to last year’s beloved eerie fishing experience, The Iron Rig, introduces fresh fish and a sinister corporation, alongside numerous new activities. Even though playing The Iron Rig after finishing the main game won’t present significant peril on your upgraded boat, it still serves as an enjoyable reason to continue fishing.
