3 Months Later, I Still Regret Buying the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL

I upgraded from a Google Pixel 6 to a Pixel 10 Pro XL about three months ago. While I expected a big improvement after spending $1200, I was disappointed. Initially, the phone was frustrating to use – it felt slow, couldn’t handle new games, and many apps were extremely laggy and almost unusable. Things are much better now, but even after months of use, the Pixel 10 Pro XL still isn’t performing as well as I’d hoped.

I’m pleased to share that, despite initially regretting my purchase of the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL, many of the biggest problems have been fixed. Most of my favorite apps now work great, and the frustrating lag I experienced at first is mostly gone. The game Destiny: Rising – which was completely unplayable when the Pixel 10 launched – now runs perfectly. It’s a huge improvement over how poorly the phone performed initially, and for a while, I was really happy with it. However, things have started to worsen since the update last month.

Pixel 10 Pro XL’s Bigger Issues Are Resolved, But There Are New Problems

Ever since I installed the October update on my Google Pixel 10 Pro, certain apps have been crashing frequently, especially Gmail. When I open an email chain with more than a few messages, the app freezes and then closes. I’ve seen other Pixel 10 Pro and XL users reporting the same problem online. While some people have found temporary fixes, none of them have worked for me. It’s become really frustrating just trying to check my email. I haven’t had this issue on my Pixel 6, so it seems to be limited to the Pixel 10, potentially the Pro and XL versions. Android Authority reported a broader issue with the Pixel 10, but it looks like most of those problems have been fixed now.

A major feature of the new Pixel phones is their AI integration. I received a free year of Google AI Pro with my Pixel 10 Pro XL – it normally costs $19.99 a month – but I haven’t found it to be worth the price. I tested its accuracy by asking if the games Gun and Peter Jackson’s King Kong were playable on older Xbox consoles. The AI initially said Gun was compatible, but King Kong wasn’t, which was incorrect. Actually, King Kong works with the physical disc, while Gun doesn’t. The AI eventually corrected itself, but it wasn’t very reliable. I also tried using it to fix some performance problems I was having with my Pixel 10 Pro XL, but it couldn’t help. While the AI tech has potential and will likely get much better, I don’t think it’s polished enough right now to be a deciding factor when buying a Pixel or any other phone.

If you are interested in AI image and video generation, you may get more use out of Gemini.

I’m hoping Google releases some more updates soon to fix the remaining issues with the Pixel 10 Pro XL. While it’s improved a lot in the last three months, I still wouldn’t recommend buying it unless it’s on sale.
