Over time, much of this region became recognized as the Golden Empire of Yi Ti, which later dropped its honorifics to simply be called Yi Ti. The stories surrounding the Great Empire of the Dawn are largely based on legends, and their veracity within the fictional world of “A Song of Ice and Fire” is questionable. The priestly scribes of the bustling port city of Yin, in Yi Ti, gathered numerous tales about the Great Empire of the Dawn and compiled them to form a significant part of its origin story.
In legend, there’s a tale about a deity known as the Night Lion, a wrathful god with an army of demons, and a benevolent being called the Maiden-of-Light. Their offspring was named Earth God, who ruled over his empire in a giant pearl-carved litter carried by his 100 queens. Despite his regal demeanor, he is said to have led his Great Empire for a perfect span of 10,000 years, bringing prosperity before ascending into the heavens with his parents. He passed down the empire to his eldest son, the Pearl Emperor, who constructed the Five Forts, supposedly to shield humanity from his grandfather’s dark intentions. Each successive emperor adopted a gemstone name and faced more challenging reigns than their predecessor. After five generations, the Bloodstone Emperor was born.
What did the Bloodstone Emperor do?
In my gaming world, I was born as the first-born to the Opal Emperor, ruler of the radiant Dawn Empire, an empire surprisingly progressive for its time. Unlike the power struggles in Westeros, our emperor was preparing to pass the throne not to a son, but his daughter – the Amethyst Empress. She was the first female ruler our empire had ever seen. Tragically, her wicked younger brother took her life in cold blood and claimed the throne.
What was the Bloodstone Emperor’s legacy?
During that period, numerous priests thought the wicked acts of the Bloodstone Emperor provoked the Wrath of the Night’s Lion. It is possible that the progenitor of the first emperor unleashed a fierce retribution upon his potential heirs. The Blood Betrayal and the Bloodstone Emperor’s rejection of the initial deities led to the Light Maiden withdrawing her protection from humankind. With her gone, the Night’s Lion seized control, initiating the infamous Long Night that threatened the extinction of mankind. Different cultures offer varying interpretations of the Long Night. Some contemporary scholars argue it was merely a myth. In essence, Old Nan describes the event as follows:
Fear is what arises during prolonged periods of darkness, when the sun remains hidden, leaving babies to be born, live, and pass away without ever seeing daylight. During this time, even the strong direwolves become weak and famished, while the ominous white walkers roam the forests.
In the mythology of ‘Game of Thrones’, the Bloodstone Emperor is infamously portrayed as an incredibly wicked character. He emphasizes the grave errors of two major transgressions: killing one’s kin and forsaking deities. An intriguing scientific theory suggests that the ominous black stone might have been a real meteor, causing a shift in the planet’s rotation and leading it into an ice age. Although the Bloodstone Emperor is merely a fictional character within a fictional tale, his chilling narrative continues to serve as a cautionary tale against the darkest abuses of power by rulers.
