As a lifelong Marvel enthusiast who’s been through my fair share of comic book store line-ups and midnight premieres, I can confidently say that the latest leak for Thunderbolts* has me buzzing like a supervillain on Red Bull! The action-packed footage, the tantalizing plot snippets, and the confirmation of some major rumors have me counting down the days until May 2025.

Although filming for Thunderbolts has been completed, the storyline is still kept secret. Will the recent leaked trailer provide a sneak peek into the plot?

Marvel has managed to control information leaks about their upcoming movies for the most part, but the film Thunderbolts is currently under fire due to online leakage. Although the main storyline is still shrouded in mystery, bits and pieces of the plot have emerged, even validating a substantial earlier speculation.

A brief clip from the initial trailer of “Thunderbolts” was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con towards the end of July, only to appear online a few weeks after that. Interestingly, the online chatter among Marvel enthusiasts shows they are largely satisfied with what they’ve seen. As reported by @cosmic_marvel, the leaked footage showcased several intriguing aspects, such as Yelena Belova, familiar faces, thrilling action sequences, and a significant setup for the antiheroes.

The leaked footage offers a deeper look into Belova’s (played by Florence Pugh) journey, highlighting her both in combat and in emotionally charged interactions. One of the most significant scenes shows her reunion with her adoptive father, Red Guardian (played by David Harbour). This moment is bittersweet, as it becomes clear that Belova and Red Guardian are in very different places, emotionally and mentally. Belova is shown to be struggling with an identity crisis, searching for a sense of purpose after the events of Black Widow. She candidly admits that her current purpose is “killing others”. In contrast, Red Guardian appears to have found some measure of peace and happiness in his life. Another key sequence features Belova in a fierce battle against U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) in a mysterious warehouse. This scene is particularly significant because both U.S. Agent and Ghost have been absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for some time – U.S. Agent was last seen in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (2021), while Ghost has not appeared since Ant-Man and The Wasp (2018). The footage highlights an intense fight scene for Belova, reminiscent of Black Widow’s iconic battle in Iron Man 2. This seems to be a deliberate nod to Belova’s roots and training under Black Widow.

The leak has confirmed a major piece of speculation that had been circulating for months. Recent rumors had suggested that Thunderbolts* would bring together a team of antiheroes in a manner similar to DC’s Suicide Squad. The leaked footage reveals that the antiheroes will be assigned the same mission, which, as it turns out, is part of a much larger setup. According to the rumors, Yelena Belova, U.S. Agent, Ghost, and Taskmaster will be sent on this mission by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, to eliminate a mysterious target. The footage does not clarify the identity of this enigmatic figure or how other characters might be involved in the plot. However, it does confirm that the previous speculation about the movie’s premise was accurate all along.

In a more playful vein, the trailer offers some captivating sneak peeks into the characters’ looks. The ghostly figure will don a brand-new costume in the film, while Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) is also expected to get a stylish upgrade, although only these two changes have been confirmed thus far. Moreover, Bucky Barnes makes an appearance in the trailer, flaunting his iconic metal arm and even sporting a suit. Notably, he’s grown his hair long again, quite different from the shorter style seen earlier promotional images. These visual alterations are intriguing, but the leaked footage doesn’t disclose any significant plot twists or fresh story details that weren’t previously known. Patience will be key as fans wait for more official releases to get a clearer understanding of what’s in store for the upcoming Thunderbolts.

Thunderbolts* is set to premiere on May 2, 2025.
