As a seasoned Pokemon fan with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that MunchyKu’s Alolan Cubone design has stirred a sense of nostalgia and excitement within me. Having grown up with the original Cubone and witnessing its evolution into Marowak get an Alola makeover, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment that Cubone was left out in the cold. However, MunchyKu’s interpretation of this missing piece has reignited my hope that one day, Game Freak might take notice and give us the Alolan Cubone we deserve.

Enthusiasts of Pokemon will recall that Alolan Marowak made its debut in Pokemon Sun and Moon. The game introduced Alola versions for various Pokemon, creating a distinctive appearance to set them apart from their traditional forms, as they evolved in an area separate from the mainland. Interestingly, Marowak could acquire an Alola version, but Cubone remained unchanged. When a standard Cubone evolves in Alola, it transforms into an Alolan Marowak; however, Cubone itself retains its original look across different games. This artwork illustrates what it might have been like if both evolutions received unique regional adaptations.

Fans Wish Alolan Cubone Were Real
Enthusiastic Pokemon enthusiasts have showered praise on MunchyKu’s design, with many suggesting it is the Alolan Cubone that fans “should have had” in the first place. Some players felt they were “cheated,” expressing disappointment that Cubone only received a regional evolution rather than a standard form. The adorable Alolan-inspired design of Cubone appears to be well-received, and there is still hope among fellow fans that Game Freak might one day introduce an Alolan Cubone as a retroactive addition to the franchise.
It appears that it’s not expected for Game Freak to revisit Alolan Pokemon in their upcoming game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Instead, the game is set to bring back Mega Evolutions. Although there’s a possibility that Alolan Pokemon might be found within the game or transferred from another title, it seems that Mega Evolutions will be the primary focus, with no new unique features for Pokemon being introduced except for these transformations. Nevertheless, many fans are thrilled about the return of Mega Evolutions, even though their hopes for Alolan Cubone might not be realized.
