Hazelight Studios is known for creating exceptional cooperative games. Titles like A Way Out, It Takes Two, and Split Fiction are brilliantly designed for two players and truly showcase the power of playing together. These stories wouldn’t work as well – or capture the same feeling and fun – if played solo. While all three games are excellent, It Takes Two was the breakthrough hit that brought Hazelight Studios widespread recognition and raised the standard for modern co-op experiences. A Way Out and Split Fiction are fantastic, but often compared to the success of It Takes Two.
Truly special games like It Takes Two are rare, and there’s nothing quite like it. Fortunately, we’re seeing more and more local co-op games become popular, in part because of the success of games from Hazelight. This means the future looks promising for cooperative adventures that offer creative stories, challenging puzzles, and emphasize teamwork. Since It Takes Two really shines with its originality, let’s take a look at some exciting upcoming co-op games that also promise to be unique and stand out.
Tojibo
A Cozy 2-Player Puzzle Platformer
Hazelight Studio focuses entirely on cooperative gameplay, meaning none of their games can be played solo. While this is a bold choice that limits their potential audience, Hazelight’s established reputation now ensures new releases get noticed. This isn’t always the case for smaller independent developers who take the same approach. For example, Tojibo by Vermeil Soft is a puzzle-platformer designed for two players, offering both local and online cooperative modes.
Okay, let me be upfront: this game doesn’t look like It Takes Two. If you’re hoping for a strong story focus, Tojibo might not be for you. But if what you loved about It Takes Two was the brilliant co-op puzzles, then I think you’ll really enjoy this! It’s a 2D platformer completely built around teamwork – you’ll genuinely need to help and even carry your partner to get through each level. They’re promising the puzzles will be challenging, but fun – not frustratingly hard, which is something It Takes Two did so well, and it sounds like Tojibo is aiming for the same thing.
Reanimal
A Co-Op Horror Adventure
I’m especially excited about Reanimal from Tarsier Studios. Their Little Nightmares games are fantastic horror puzzle-platformers – a rare combination! Reanimal looks to be in the same style, but with a big addition: cooperative play. While Little Nightmares 2 had two characters you controlled, it didn’t offer multiplayer. Reanimal will let two players team up either locally or online. The game focuses on two siblings, and their relationship will likely be a key part of the story, potentially echoing the dynamic between the couple in It Takes Two.
Though it doesn’t involve traveling between universes, the game Reanimal is set in a strange and terrifying world inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. The campaign will take players through a variety of unusual and unsettling locations as they embark on a stressful quest to rescue a friend. Along the way, they’ll encounter hostile creatures. Reanimal has a much darker tone than It Takes Two, so players should be comfortable with horror to truly enjoy it. The gameplay will mainly center around solving puzzles and using stealth.
Reanimal‘s demo is available! Give it a try if you like what you see.
Haunted Paws
The Goodest Of Boys Try To Rescue Their Best Friend
Don’t like scary games? Then check out Haunted Paws, a cute and cozy horror game! You and a friend play as puppies – yes, you’re dogs! That alone might be enough to grab your attention, but let’s take a closer look at what this game offers.
In Haunted Paws, you play as a group of brave puppies who enter a spooky haunted mansion to find their owner. Along the way, they’ll encounter creepy creatures and have to explore, solve puzzles, and unravel mysteries—all while trying to survive! Yes, you really do play as puppies.
Awaysis
A Co-Op Physics Brawling Adventure
While It Takes Two has a solid story, many players enjoy it most for how it plays. Hazelight Studios excels at seamlessly connecting the story to the gameplay, making them work together perfectly. Awaysis appears to be focusing on strong gameplay as well, and hopefully will also deliver a fun and engaging story about a battle between good and evil.
Based on what we’ve seen, Awaysis takes place on a beautiful, floating mountain. The game follows a team of animal-inspired characters on a dangerous quest to protect their home, battling enemies with swords and other weapons. What makes the combat stand out is that it’s based on realistic physics, which should offer a fresh experience. While fighting is central to the game, it will probably also include jumping and platforming challenges, and perhaps even some puzzles, though that’s just speculation at this point.
