A new sourcebook for Dungeons & Dragons reveals what happens to Astarion, a fan-favorite character from the hit video game Baldur’s Gate 3. This official Dungeons & Dragons material is a tribute to the game, focusing on Astarion’s story with a supplement called “Astarion’s Book of Hunger.” The digital supplement expands on Astarion’s background as a vampire rogue, and it seems another familiar character will also be making an unexpected appearance.
Karlach quickly became a fan favorite companion in Baldur’s Gate 3. Players meet this former champion of Zariel early in the game, recruiting her on the Risen Road during Act One. As the party’s Barbarian, Karlach’s story reveals her unwilling service as a soldier in the Blood War. Now, players are learning more about what happens to Karlach after the game’s ending.
New Dungeons and Dragons Book Contains Karlach Easter Egg
A new digital supplement for Dungeons & Dragons, called “Astarion’s Book of Hunger,” reveals updates to Karlach’s story after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3. According to the supplement, Karlach can be found in the city of Baldur’s Gate in the year 1501 DR, as detailed in the new “Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun” book. This suggests she’s managed to stabilize her Infernal Engine, with one possible outcome being a temporary return to Avernus until a permanent cure is discovered. The epilogue of Baldur’s Gate 3 also implied that a cure for her engine might be possible.
Karlach appearing in Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun officially confirms one of the endings from Baldur’s Gate 3 as the established ‘canon.’ While Baldur’s Gate 3 offers many different endings depending on player choices, this confirms how Karlach’s story concludes. Similarly, Astarion’s Book of Hunger provides much deeper insight into Astarion’s character, including specific dates for his birth and death, and expands on his history.
The latest sourcebook for Dungeons & Dragons offers a lot of new content, extending beyond the themes of Baldur’s Gate. The 2024 edition of D&D will introduce eight new subclasses, bringing back some favorites and adding completely new options for players. Wizards of the Coast has also been playtesting new classes, such as the Psion and Artificer, through their “Unearthed Arcana” series. These new books promise something for everyone, whether you’re a longtime D&D fan or enjoyed Baldur’s Gate.
