As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that D.Va is indeed a game-changer for beginners in Overwatch 2. Being a South Korean eSports superstar and mecha pilot myself, I can relate to Hana Song on a personal level!

As a budding Overwatch 2 gamer, I found that diving into the Tank role could be an excellent choice for novices due to their robust health pool and sturdy construction. However, being a Tank comes with its fair share of responsibility, especially in team-based modes where only one Tank is permitted per side. This can make newcomers hesitant to give the Tank class a try, but trust me, it’s full of rewards for beginners.

As a seasoned Overwatch 2 player with years of gameplay under my belt, I can confidently say that I’ve come across some excellent Tank heroes that are perfect for beginners. In this article, we’ll be focusing on five Tanks that excel in ease of use, abilities, and maneuverability – factors that are crucial when it comes to newcomers like myself. Let’s dive right in!

5 Wrecking Ball

Cute & Fluffy

  • Abilities: Quad Cannon, Roll, Grappling Claw, Piledriver, Adaptive Shield
  • Ultimate Ability: Minefield
  • English VA: Dee Bradley Baker and Jonathan Lipow

As a fanatic, I’d describe this character as a charming, colossal hamster extraordinaire! With a knack for construction and a mind for engineering, he whips up and pilots a mammoth mechanical ball like no one else. Yet, despite his complexities, he’s an accessible Tank for beginners, making him the perfect addition to any gaming roster!

Wrecking Ball transforms into a rolling ball for swift navigation across the battlefield, but he can also assume a slower form with mechanical legs, offering him a wide range of movement options. His Grappling Claw enables him to attach to specific areas and swing from or around them, further enhancing his agility. When attached, the Grappling Claw can inflict damage on enemies or push them back, potentially knocking them off the map if they’re near an edge. On the other hand, Tank, modeled after a hamster, is armed with Quad Cannons that cause significant damage. He can also perform an aerial slam with his Piledriver move and safeguard himself using Adaptive Shield. If desired, he can share this shield with his team members for collective protection.

In essence, the Minefield skill of Wrecking Ball is quite entertaining to employ. It lays down a series of explosives on the battlefield. Each mine inflicts 165 damage, so any adversary Damage or Support characters trapped within it would be fortunate to escape unscathed. The combination of Wrecking Ball’s defensive and offensive prowess, coupled with his adaptable mobility, makes him an excellent pick for beginners.

4 Zarya

From Russia, With Love

  • Abilities: Particle Cannon, Particle Cannon Alternate Fire, Projected Barrier, Particle Barrier, Energy
  • Ultimate Ability: Graviton Surge
  • English VA: Dolya Gavanski

The Russian weightlifting and bodybuilding titan, Zarya, is also an excellent option for novice Tank users. Her straightforward skill set, comprising just a few talents, makes her simple to handle for gamers.

Zarya is centered around energy, with her Particle Cannon’s main attack being a short-range laser blast. The more harm she takes and stores in her Barrier, the more potent her laser becomes, reaching maximum power when fully charged. Interestingly, this laser can’t be countered or deflected like other weapons. Instead of a continuous beam, she also has an alternate fire that launches an energy grenade in a chosen direction. Additionally, Zarya can defend herself and her team with her Barriers, though these only last for 2.25 seconds. If used effectively at the right moment, these barriers can be crucial to her survival and that of her team. Her Graviton Surge Ultimate is a projectile that can be fired at the opposing team, pulling them together and making them more susceptible to attacks. While it doesn’t deal much damage on its own, it complements other Ultimates remarkably well — like Hanzo’s Dragonstrike Launch or D.Va’s Self Destruct — to the extent that it can eliminate an entire team if executed correctly.

As a devoted fan, I’ve found that Zarya isn’t the speediest Tank in the Overwatch 2 lineup, but she more than makes up for it with her exceptional protective abilities. Once her Particle Cannon Beam charges, she transforms into an unstoppable force to be reckoned with. She’s a great character for beginners to master due to her user-friendly nature and high damage tolerance, offering plenty of enjoyable learning experiences along the way.

3 Reinhardt

Hammer Time

  • Abilities: Rocket Hammer, Charge, Fire Strike, Barrier Field
  • Ultimate Ability: Earthshatter
  • English VA: Darin De Paul

At a quick look, Reinhardt appears as a relentless guardian for Tank roles. However, skilled players of Overwatch 2 may recognize that this isn’t an unwavering rule, as Reinhardt players often rush into the enemy lines without hesitation, wielding their hammers wildly. This tactic can be effective (though not always optimal for the team), making it a choice for newcomers to experiment with how they want to play him.

Reinhardt’s Barrier Field, or his large protective barrier, has a user-friendly design; players simply need to raise it for protection. However, be mindful of its durability since it can deplete rapidly. Reinhardt’s Fire Strike is straightforward to manage, but his Charge requires some accuracy to avoid charging beyond the map boundaries or into walls. When Reinhardt employs his Earthshatter Ultimate, he knocks out all nearby enemies and inflicts damage. This move synergizes effectively with Fire Strike or Charge, but it performs exceptionally well when utilized in conjunction with another ultimate, similar to Zarya’s Graviton Surge, as it momentarily stuns any enemy struck by it.

Players new to the game who are keen on mastering team defense while still having some offensive capabilities for taking out opponents will find Reinhardt’s skillset extremely appealing. As a versatile Tank, he serves as an ideal starting point for beginners to grasp the nuances of Overwatch 2, thanks to his robust defense and numerous combo opportunities.

2 Roadhog

Baconator

  • Abilities: Scrap Gun, Chain Hook, Take A Breather, and Pig Pen
  • Ultimate Ability: Whole Hog
  • English VA: Josh Petersdorf

Roadhog has undergone several adjustments in his configuration since the initial release of Overwatch, yet similar to before, he remains an excellent choice for beginners as one of the top Tank characters.

Roadhog’s Take A Breather self-healing skill is sure to be an attractive ability for beginners, as he already has a significant health bar. It doesn’t make him invincible by any means, but — when paired with some effective healers — it can make him tough to take down. The Scrap Gun that Roadhog uses does a fair amount of damage and can make for some impressive one-hit kills when combined with his Chain Hook. The Chain Hook is also a great skill in and of itself that can interrupt enemy attacks, though players do have to make sure that their aim is up to the task to avoid missing when trying to hook enemy players.

The latest addition to Roadhog’s repertoire is his Pig Pen trap, which damages enemies that activate it and also slows them. Much like his regular Scrap Gun attack, the Pig Pen combines fantastically with the Chain Hook. Setting a trap on the ground and dragging an enemy into it with the hook makes for a painful combo for the unfortunate victim, especially Support or Damage heroes with smaller health bars. His Whole Hog Ultimate allows players to attack enemies with a stream of scrap shrapnel that pushes them back. It also does damage, but it works best to push enemies out of the way or off of the map. It also works great when combined with more damaging ults, as Roadhog can push hiding enemies out into the open to allow teammates to take them out.

Roadhog’s knack for taking damage and self-healing makes him an ideal starting choice for a Tank, especially for beginners. However, his skill set is not just about survivability; it also allows for powerful combo attacks when used in conjunction with his own abilities and those of his teammates. This makes Roadhog a great option for novices who are eager to explore the synergies between different moves.

1 D.Va

Queen Of Mechs

  • Abilities: Fusion Cannons, Light Gun, Boosters, Micro Missiles, Defense Matrix, Eject and Call Mech
  • Ultimate Ability: Self-Destruct
  • English VA: Charlet Chung

The best Tank for beginners has to be Hana Song a.k.a D.Va, the South Korean eSports superstar and mecha pilot. D.Va has a simple yet highly effective set of moves that can easily be picked up by newbies of any skill level.

D.Va’s mech exhibits remarkable power and unexpected agility. Its maneuverability is exceptional, and this becomes particularly evident when she activates her Boosters. These Boosters enable her to soar in her mech for a duration ranging from 0.4 seconds to 2 seconds. This feature lets her swiftly dodge enemy attacks and also propel herself towards teammates for their protection or charge into enemies, knocking them back or even eliminating them if they’re already low on health. Despite not using the Boosters, D.Va navigates the battlefield smoothly without feeling cumbersome or overtly robotic.

One standout aspect of D.Va that’s beneficial for novices is her Fusion Cannons, serving as her primary weapon. Unlike conventional firearms, these cannons don’t require reloading, enabling players to shoot uninterrupted without worrying about reloads. Although it may not be overly potent in terms of power, the convenience of continuous firing without reloading more than compensates for this. Her secondary ability is the Micro Missiles skill, which enters a cool-down phase every seven seconds. Upon activation, D.Va unleashes 18 missiles that inflict 3 points of damage if they hit an enemy directly. The missiles operate autonomously, making it simple yet effective to use.

When D.Va’s mechanical suit is demolished or she activates her Ultimate ability, she safely ejects from it and resorts to using her Light Gun. This weapon, despite its small size, packs a punch capable of eliminating enemies with precise headshots. With 200 health points outside her mech, D.Va can later summon and re-enter the mechanical suit once the Call Mech ability is fully charged (the charging process commences immediately upon exiting the mech). Additionally, nearby enemies will sustain damage when she re-enters the mech, and in some cases, they might even be crushed to oblivion by the colossal machine.

In the game, D.Va’s ultimate ability is exceptionally potent. By exiting her mechanical suit, which subsequently explodes, she unleashes a blast that inflicts damage ranging from 100 to a staggering 1000. This detonation zone is often lethal for those unfortunate enough to be within its reach. The explosion can’t pierce defensive barriers, but it does have the power to demolish them. When D.Va deploys her ultimate, it frequently results in team kills or at least multiple casualties, especially if she strategically positions herself ahead of time. Even if she doesn’t secure any kills, her ultimate can disorganize enemies and provoke panic, leaving them vulnerable.

In Overwatch 2, D.Va stands out as an ideal tank choice for newcomers due to her blend of potent capabilities, agile maneuverability, substantial health reserve, continuous primary firing mechanism, and the unique feature that allows her to remain engaged in combat even after being forced from her mech.
